Match Preview: Cork City v UCD

Cork City and UCD will both be hoping to build on their respective wins in last week’s opening round of the FAI Cup when they meet this evening at Turners Cross in the SSE Airtricity First Division (7:45pm)

Sitting in ninth place in the league, Cork’s cup win away to Premier Division opponents Sligo may give them the confidence required to climb the league after four games without a win.

Three points this evening could see the home-side move out of the bottom two on goal difference if local rivals Cobh Ramblers lose to table-toppers Shelbourne.

UCD’s cup victory over Shels last weekend, which put an end to the side’s season-long unbeaten run (16 games), will ensure that the Students arrive to Turners  with plenty of assurance too.

Currently fourth with 6 points from their last 5 games, Andrew Myler’s charges will be looking to stay in the promotion places and fight off competition from a resurgent Bray Wanderers.

A second half penalty strike from First Division top scorer Colm Whelan (10 goals) secured UCD’s cup win over Shelbourne and the side will look to him again to provide an attacking threat against a Cork side that have lost 5 home fixtures this season.

Alec Byrne is suspended for City but manager Colin Healy may hope some of his new midfield signings can fill the breach.

20-year-old Irish underage international Barry Coffey arrived on loan from Celtic this week while Aaron Bolger, recently released from Cardiff City, became Cork’s second signing of the transfer window.

Both players could make their first appearance for the club tonight along with Kerry native Sean Kennedy who signed his first professional contract with the club this week.

Cork last met UCD in round 8 of this season’s fixtures when they played out a 0-0 draw at Belfield.

Despite the result both sides played attack-minded football in pursuit of three points with the Lee-siders having the better chances but failing to capitalise.

If played at a similar pace, tonight’s fixture could make for entertaining viewing for the limited number of supporters permitted attendance at Turners Cross.

  • Hello and welcome along to Turners Cross, as Cork City take on UCD in the SSE Airtricity First Division! Both sides will be looking to build on their respective wins in the FAI Cup last weekend. A win for the Lee-siders could see them climb out of the bottom two of the First Division while three points for UCD would see the Students solidify their position in the promotion play-off places. K.O is at 7.45pm.
