Match Report

Conor cans Cobh win

Cobh Ramblers beat Cabinteely thanks to a late header from substitute Conor Drinan in the League of Ireland First Division at St Colman’s Park this evening.

Both sides had some big chances throughout the 90 minutes but Cobh’s never say die attitude prevailed.

Ramblers started the game off the better of the two sides. Naythan Coleman caused trouble down the Cabinteely right side in the early stages and his excellent cross was just inches away from the on rushing Jake Hegarty who couldn’t find that all important touch.

Cabo started to grow into the game and thought they had opened the scoring when the ever lively Kieran Marty Waters striked home from the edge of the Rams’ box. Sadly for the visitors, the referee awarded a free kick to the hosts.

Ben Feeney then had a chance for Pat Devlin’s side as Conor Knight’s ball found the striker in acres of space just inside the box but the Cabo forward dragged his shot wide of Barron in the Cobh net.

Stuart Ashton’s men then had a succession of chances of their own just before the interval. A long ball by Kavanagh was cleared by Blackbyrne but only as far as Jake Hegarty. Hegarty rushed his shot and it rolled into the hands of Cabo goalkeeper Michael Quinn.

On the stroke of half time, Coleman had a free header from a Cobh corner but the defender couldn’t find the target from a couple of yards out. The scores went in level at the interval.

The home side started the second half in the same fashion as the first. Danny O’Connell almost opened the scoring for them with an excellent turn around Knight in the Cabo area but Quinn saved well to deny the Cobh man.

Jem Campion and Keith Devlin were introduced midway through the second period, and both had chances to open the scoring moments after being introduced. Dalton’s shot fired just wide of Barron in the Rams’ net.

With just under four minutes of normal time remaining, Ian Turner’s corner was headed home from the edge of Cabo’s six yard box by substitute Conor Drinan bringing all of St. Colman’s Park to their feet.

Drinan’s goal was almost cancelled out in the sixth minute of injury time by Jem Campion who latched onto Blackbyrne’s long throw. However, the Cabinteely substitute scuffed his shot over the bar giving all three points to the home side. The Cork side now sit just six points outside the top five thanks to Drinan’s winner.
