Own goal hands Shels win

A last minute own goal from Alex Aspil gifted all three points to Shels in Tolka Park tonight.

Cabo frustrated Ian Morris’ men for the majority of the game before a late Kev O’Connor free kick was headed into his own net by substitute Aspil.

The win extends Shels’ unbeaten run in the league this season to 14 games as they look poised return to the Premier Division.

Cabinteely started the game off as the better side but both teams struggled to find that killer pass in the opponents final third throughout the first half. Cabo had a penalty claim turned down after the first half an hour when Vilius Labutis was brought down inside the area by JR Wilson but the referee awarded a corner over a spot kick. The resulting corner was headed over the bar by Blackbyrne which was Pat Devlin’s side’s best chance of the half.

Shels came close straight after when a clever Dayle Rooney ball found the on rushing Kev O’Connor who dragged his shot wide of Halwax in the Cabinteely net. The sides went into the interval level. The 2nd half started at a ferocious pace with McPhillips almost opening the scoring for Cabo inside the first 20 seconds of the half but his effort from 25 yards flashed just wide of the Shels’ goal.

Dayle Rooney then almost scored for Shels after he cut in from the right and curled an excellent left footed shot right onto the Cabinteely crossbar and out for a goal kick. Cabinteely’s well organised and disciplined defence frustrated Shels throughout the 2nd period and as Shelbourne pushed forward looking for an opening goal, it left space in behind for Cabinteely to exploit. Zak O’Neill broke down the left wing late on in the half and his cross found the substitute Alex Aspil who was blocked superbly by Shels’ midfield engine JJ Lunney to keep the scores level.

Just as it looked like it was going to be one of those days for Ian Morris’ men, Kev O’Connor floated a free kick into the Cabo area which was met by the head of Cabinteely’s Alex Aspil who fired home from close range into his own net.

The stoppage time winner from Shelbourne was enough to claim all three points as they stay 11 points clear at the top of The League Of Ireland First Division.
