Match Report

Costello claws out Galway win

Wexford’s title hopes were dealt with a massive dent as Aoibheen Costello’s late goal for Galway United clinched the tie in a tight contest in Ferrycarrig Park.

For a long time, it looked as if this game was heading to a scoreless stalemate but a counter-attack from Galway after Wexford pushed players forward looking for a late winner of their own worked in the Westerners favour.

Victory for the visitors sees Peamount remain on top of the table. Sinead Taylor did have a chance to equalise late on but it was the Tribeswomen who left the southeast with three points in what was a vital victory in the say of this seasons title race.

Youths took the game to the hosts and it looked as if it was going to be a matter of time before they opened the scoring. Edel Kennedy went closest to score, when a cross from Ciara Rossiter was met by the Wexford player at the back post, however, her effort went over the bar. Emma Starr with a clever turn for the visitors had a shot in the area that Ciamh Gray was equal to.

Kennedy was on hand once again with a chance to put the Youths in front, her shot sailed over the bar when it looked easier to score. Lynsey McKey got in behind the Wexford defence late on in the half but her low shot was well saved by Gray.

The second half was a cagy and tense affair for most of the opening exchanges but as the half wore on the game began to open up and both sides had chances to open their accounts for the night. Cohen was under serious pressure in the Galway goal had to pull off a number of saves from set-pieces and had her defence to thank to clear a corner that almost fell to three Wexford players who were ready to pounce, Emma Starr had another headed opportunity on goal but it was well saved.

The deadlock was broken late on as Wexford began to push more players forward from a counter-attacking breakaway Galway got their noses in front. The initial shot from Starr was saved by Cray but Costello was on hand to curl home the rebound after taking the ball off a Wexford defender. This goal and win will have a big say in the title race as Wexford's twenty games unbeaten run at home came to a shuddering end.
