DLR keep Shels league hopes alive
An exhibition in goalkeeping from Eve Badana helped DLR Waves come away with a point from Greenogue in their 0-0 draw against Peamount in the WNL tonight.
The result means that the title comes down to the final day of the season, as both The Peas and Shelbourne are in contention for the prize.
A slow opening at Greenogue, saw both sides struggle to carve out clear-cut chances.
Towards the end of the first-half the hosts began to strut their stuff. Full-backs Dearbháile Beirne and Lucy McCartan were instrumental in helping the Peas build out from the back.
A McCartan cross brought the game to life when it ricocheted off of Aoife Brophy’s hand and the hosts were awarded a penalty.
Tiegan Ruddy stepped up but was denied by Badana, who managed to get up in time to smother the rebound and keep the game scoreless.
The custodian was called upon just minutes later when she made a fantastic reflex save to deny Aine O’Gorman from opening the scoring.
After the restart the game continued at a more frantic pace, with Naoisha McAloon making a good save from Nadine Clare’s effort.
Badana would again be the busier goalkeeper. She managed to push Stephanie Roche’s long range effort on to the crossbar, denying a wondergoal.
O’Gorman was denied once again from getting on the scorehseet just before the hour mark when Badana managed to stretch right across the goal to palm the ball around the post.
DLR were defensive for the remainder of the game. Kerri Letmon had their best chance of the second-half, with an effort from 20 yards just going wide.
Peamount pinned their opponents to their own box with a barrage of chances.
Lauren Kelly was introduced with 15 minutes to go and immediately went close, when her effort inside the six-yard box was met by a sea of DLR bodies.
She would find herself through on goal in the dying moments but had her attempt blocked again.
James O’Callaghan’s side welcome Galway City to PRL Park next week, while second place Shelbourne host Wexford Youths in what will surely be a very exciting final day.
