Youths keep WNL hopes alive
Wexford Youths kept their WNL title hopes alive, as they stay glued to Peamount upfront after victimising Cork City this Saturday with a 1-nil win, thanks to Sinead Taylor’s second-half goal.
All the three points travelled Slaneyside, following a clinical and short victory, penalising a well-settled and inspired Cork who caused trembling moments on the up-runners, forcing them to suffer to stay in the fight for the trophy.
As expected, the Youths came eager looking for an early goal at Turner’s Cross, with a sequence of moves near Abby McCarthy’s goal.
However, it was Laura Shine bringing forward the first clear spells to the show; the last one by connecting her head with a perfect cross as the ball went off dangerously close to the right post.
Passing the 30-minute mark, the title-runners made their intentions pretty noticeable through Taylor, as she found her way to receive an audacious ball inside Cork 6-yards box, but her first touch turned it impossible to find a finish.
The net kept getting tighter for the Rebel Army, with Kylie Murphy invading the box, but yet again the hosts’ defensive line managed to retrieve the ball with a nice slide.
Wexford’s best chances to take the lead came close to the break in the shape of Ciara Rossiter, as she sent the first attempt slightly off the post, and got denied a second and much serious shot by an Abby McCarthy’s tremendous stop.
Offensive matters kept heading East in the second half, this time with City much closer to the breakthrough, with Laura Shine hitting Wexford’s crossbar with a powerful shot from short range.
The hosts’ momentum met immediately a double-effort occasion, with Christina Dring seeing her finish bouncing off the post, and Sophie Kirwan keeping it square with a great foot-save on the follow-up.
On the replay, the opportunist Sinead Taylor brought what would be the difference on the final score as she took advantage of a scramble inside Cork’s box to slot it home in the 61st minute.
The green outfit tried to bring a reaction looking for a deserved -late equalizer, but the visitors’ experience shown itself enough to control their intentions and to push the low pace on the show through the final whistle.
