Match Report
Waterford pushed into relegation zone
Waterford find themselves facing the promotion/relegation playoff after playing out a 0-0 draw to St Patricks Athletic tonight.
The Blues seemed deflated by the score in Ballybofey most the game whilst St Pats controlled possession and chances, but never exerted themselves as next week’s cup final is surely at the forefront of their mind.
Chances were few in this game for a number of reasons but the first resemblance of a chance came seven minutes in when Chris Forrester delivered a nice ball into to box for his captain Robbie Benson, whose headed effort just clipped off the bar.
Fifteen minutes later a Pats corner found its way to James Abankwah who had a free effort, but he got his timing wrong and didn’t get the desired contact on the ball.
Right before the half hour mark, Lee Desmond put in a nice low drilled cross after some good footwork out right. His ball was met by Kyrian Nwoko, who couldn’t keep his effort down and sent it over.
The Blues did have a good passage of play in the 37th minute on the counter attack which eventually resulted in Milambo having an effort on goal, which was deflected wide.
The home side seemed to be coming into this when in the 40th minute after a Phoenix Patterson cross Shane Griffin appeared to be nudged and went down. There was a claim, but the protests weren’t strong and the ref waved play on.
The second half played out much the same. Harps continued to score on Longford and Pats controlled possession. Nwoko had a good chance in the 47th minute, but his effort was deflected wide.
Robbie Benson had a flashy moment in the 69th minute when he took off on a run and found himself through, but Brian Murphy came off his line and smothered the chance.
Jaros pulled off a pair of great saves late on. The first save came after Milambo burst through on him, but Jaros pushed it wide. From the ensuing corner, Niall O’Keeffe got a great header off but Jaros tipped it over.
Murphy displayed a fine piece of goalkeeping too when Jak Hickman tried to round him, but he got down and scooped the ball up.
Alas, Pats end their league campaign with a draw and look ahead to the cup final. Waterford on the other hand face UCD in the promotion/relegation playoff after their win over Bray tonight.

Wordsworth meets the ensuing corner but can't keep his header down.
What a save! O'Keeffe meets the corner but Jaros tips it over with cat like reflexes.
Milambo bursts through but his effort is saved one on one by Jaros. That was a golden opportunity to win it.
Hickman slices an effort on goal.
Benson lifts a free to the back post but there seems to be a handball.
Benson takes off on a great run and finds himself through on goal, but Murphy comes off his line and smothers the chance.
Hickman gets the games first yellow.
Billy King lashes a shot wide.
At the hour mark and the game is flat. Waterford are likely deflated by the news that Harps are 3-0 up and Pats as usual are dominating without exerting themselves.
Waterford deal with the pressure following the corner and move on.
Nwoko finds himself in a decent spot but it's blocked and out for a corner.
Back underway.
That's half time.
Patterson plays a ball in and Griffin has a penalty claim. Waterford are starting to come into this.
Pats eventually deal with it.
Milambo has a shot deflected just wide following Waterford's best passage of play. Corner for the blues.
We're going through a spell of Pats pressure and it feels like the visitors are calmly controlling the game.
Elsewhere, Finn Harps have taken the lead. Bad night so far for the hosts...
Lee Desmond does well out right and delivers a nice low ball, but Kyrian Nwoko can\'t keep it down. Best chance of the game thus far.
Abankwah has a free header from a corner but can't get the right contact on it.
No major chances in the last few. Waterford are walking on eggshells, whilst Pats don't seem to see the need to exert themselves.
Desmond puts it in but it's offside.
Forrester clips it to Benson who heads it off the bar.
Someone goes down in the area but ref isn't interested. Goal kick to Pats.
First corner goes to Waterford.
And we're off.
Waterford need a result tonight to avoid the playoff and hope that result better Harps' one against Longford tonight. The Blues well may be searching for a miracle, given that Longford are already relegated.
The Waterford lineup is now also in.
The St Patricks Athletic lineup is in. Four changes from last weeks team.
