Match Report
Super-sub Burke delivers for Rovers
Second half super-sub Graham Burke broke the deadlock for Shamrock Rovers in the 65th minute in what was possibly his first touch to sink the enthusiastic effort of already relegated Longford Town at Bishopsgate this evening.
The Midlanders may have felt they should have had something for their efforts, in a match that was played in terrible conditions.
Both sides struggled early on with sluggish passages of play. Over kicked passes and the ball being held up on the soaked surface saw the initial stages definitely hampered by the weather.
Rovers dominated possession early on but struggled to create any chances of purpose. Their main threat coming from set-pieces six corners to Longford Zero in the first half shows how long the home side spent on the back foot.
Hoops were forced into a first-half change as captain Ronan Finn was replaced by Lee Grace.
The stoppage in play for the injury seemed to ignite the Midlanders as not long after in the 36th minute they had the chance of the half, a sweeping counter-attacking ended with keeper Alan Manus pulling off a wonderful save to keep the sides level.
The Tallaght side were restricted to mainly long shots from outside the box and on the stroke of half-time Longford could have found the opener as Aaron Robinson struck just wide from a good free-kick delivery. The teams went in level and Daire Doyle’s side were definitely the happier of the two teams at the break.
The second half started similar to the first Rovers pinning back the hosts but failed to create anything of note.
With 63 minutes gone manager Stephen Bradley had seen enough and made a triple substitution. Two minutes later that decision paid off as Dylan Watts, who was just introduced; beat the offside trap leaving himself one-on-one with keeper Lee Steacy.
Lee pulled off a great initial block but his save rolled straight to Burke, the other sub who tapped it home with his first touch.
The Town created more chances after going the goal down, but Shamrock Rovers experience started to show as they managed the game brilliantly, running down the clock for the narrow victory. Stomping out any chance of a late revival.
The Dubliners travel home now knowing one more victory should hand them the league title, retaining it from last year.
