Match Report
Sligo bank on Lewis’s Late winner
Sligo Rovers snatched their continued hopes of European football from the death in tonight's match against Longford Town in The Showgrounds when Lewis Banks converted in the 89th minute.
A stalemate up until that time the Bit O’Red looked certain to drop points against the already relegated visitors but will now have taken confidence from their second win in as many matches.
Like the last two encounters between this pair, this affair was equally as tight-natured but ultimately saw the hosts emerge victorious.
Having beaten Drogheda United on Friday, Liam Buckley’s outfit would have been determined to maintain their momentum form in this outing.
Much of the fixture however saw only half chances in the cauldron, Andre Wright coming closest for the team from the West in the first half, with similar strikes from Paddy Kirk and Aaron Robinson for the opposition.
For much of the second 45 minutes the Town dominated with Dean Williams, Matthew O'Brien and Aodh Dervan coming to the fore and excelling.
A scare for Rovers unfolded in the 65th minute when John Mahon went down in need of treatment and eventually had leave the field of play as a result. A triple substitution followed with Seamus Keogh, Mark Byrne and Niall Morahan all entering the fray.
This was added to later on when Melvyn Lorenzen replaced Ryan DeVries, with Longford bringing Darragh Nugent, Aaron McNally and Rob Manley on too.
Nugent had an instant impact as a link up with Robinson saw an opportunity develop for him in the 72nd minute, alerting the hosts that his squad were still a force to be reckoned with.
The killer blow however came just a few moments from the final whistle. Sustained attacking threats from both teams led onlookers to believe there would in fact be a winner to surface, and more than likely off a counter move.
While Longford compacted up at the back, Sligo’s break via Johnny Kenny on the right wing deflected and found Banks on the outside of the box to drill the ball past Michael Kelly for the winner.

Six points amongst four days would be a welcome yet expected result for the home group this evening, but with the unruly nothing to lose attitude of Longford, anything could occur come kick off time.
Walter Figueira and Adam McDonnell have also been dangerous for The Reds in attack, with Robbie McCourt and Lewis Banks suring things up defensively.
Keeper Ed McGinty gathered his 10th clean sheet of the year during the United battle but will come to blows with Williams, Dylan Grimes, Conor Davis and Co. in this affair. On the other hand Lee Steacy will be staring down the barrel of inform Kenny who has now accumulated nine goals in 19 starts, five of which came in his last seven fixtures.
This edition of Monday night football itself marks Sligo’s penultimate home showcase of the season and so they will be optimistic to secure some vital spoils against The Town.
Sligo’s victory saw ‘The Two Johnny’s’ incarnated in The Yeats County. John Mahon’s header and Johnny Kenny’s 88th minute goal saw the spoils captured by Liam Buckley’s men, who have also wrapped up some more business in recent days. Garry Buckley and captain Greg Bolger both having signed contract extensions have committed their futures to Rovers for the long haul and reflect the club’s ambition for the coming years.
The Bit O’Red snapped their six game winless streak on Friday night when they put two goals past Drogheda United to earn some breathing room between themselves and Derry City who are now four points behind them in fourth place. On the flipside already relegated Longford have 14 marks to their name and so aspire to cause a shock tonight out West in the Premier Division.
Rovers recorded a 2-0 success over Drogheda United last Friday in what was the seventh home league win over the year. One of those victories was a 2-0 win against Longford earlier in the year, while Liam Buckley’s side earned 1-0 victories at Bishopsgate.
Sligo Rovers will look to build on their demolition of bad form as they welcome bottom side Longford Town to the Showgrounds this evening at 7:45pm. My name is Alanna Cunnane and I'm bringing you tonight's match commentary
