Match Report
Magic Mandroiu secures Rovers win
A Daniel Mandroiu brace, helped secure Shamrock Rovers all three points, as they overcame Waterford 2-0, in tonight’s SSE Airtricity League meeting at Tallaght Stadium.
Both efforts arrived in the second half, as the Rovers forward have threatened all night. This win sees them climb back up to top spot, three points clear of St Patrick’s Athletic.
After a cagey opening half of football, The Hoops managed to find the breakthrough through Mandroiu, as the visitors failed to threaten in front of goal, during the second half.
Waterford goalkeeper Brian Murphy, was called into action almost immediately, producing a phenomenal acrobatic save with his feet, with Mandroiu finding the target with a header.
The forward looked dangerous in the opening 10 minutes, getting in behind the Waterford defence again, but his effort at goal came cracking back off the crossbar.
It was a testing opening half for both sides, as The Blues staged a come back late in the half, Alan Mannus was on to save well from a flick on, before Anthony Wordsworth, had a golden chance to score the opener, unmarked at the back post from a free kick, his effort hit the side netting.
As the second half got underway, the Dubliners threatened from the off, getting their reward in the 61st minute, Eddie Nolan going in the book for charging down a Rovers shot on the edge of the box, the resulting free kick was dispatched by Mandroiu, curling the shot around the wall and into the net.
Barry Cotter had a great chance to double his sides lead, in the 79th minute, the defender hitting a ferocious shot at goal, but straight into the arms of Murphy.
Mandroiu got his second goal just moments later, the forward dispossessed Greg Halford, breaking through the Waterford backline and firing a shot under Murphy into the back of the net.
Hoops looked dangerous in the final exchanges, they could have easily added another goal, but Waterford did well to keep it to a 2-0 score-line.
The win does wonders for Rovers, putting them three points ahead of St Pats, after their defeat tonight, and ends a terrible run of form in recent weeks.
