Match Report

Scheriff Nets Twice As Athlone Pick Up Points In Ferrycarrig

Two goals from Dana Scheriff saw Athlone Town defeat Wexford Youths 3-1 at Ferrycarrig Park as sixth took on seventh in the Women's Premier Division this evening.

It was a close encounter for most of the match and it took the brilliance of second half substitute Scheriff to split the two sides under the lights.

Athlone kicked off the game in style, starting the scoring barely 90 seconds in, with midfielder Muireann Devaney finishing off a cutback to the edge of the box by rifling the ball into the top left hand corner of the Wexford Youths net.

The opening exchanges of the game was much in the same vein, as Athlone pushed the Youths hard to try and capitalise on their early dominance, another great strike from Devaney flew just over the bar from around 25 yards displaying her team's threat once again.

It took a superb goal from Rianna Jarrett to pull Wexford level against the run of play as she picked the ball up 20 yards from goal before turning and firing a low drive past Nyla Peterkin in the 16th minute. This goal seemed to calm the team collectively and they began to have a much better foothold in the game, controlling the midfield and subding the Athlone attacks for the time being.

An effort from Jarrett was cleared well from the line and a powerful run by Kellie Brennan could only amount to a shot easily dealt with by Wexford’s keeper Maeve Williams as the first half drew to a close at a much slower rate than it had started.

The second half started with a lack of quality being shown by both teams as crisp passing from the first half was replaced by a period of constant fouling and injury delays. Scarlett Herron could feel lucky to have stayed on the pitch having dragged down a clean through Abbie Brophy in the 50th minute, possibly only Brophy’s angle from goal saving her from dismissal. The resulting free kick by Ciara Rossiter put Peterkin to the test as she had to go full stretch to tip it around the post for a corner.

A wonderful ball by Rossiter a few minutes later was inches from being finished by Brophy at the back post but the lack of a finishing touch would prove telling as only a couple of minutes later the ball was in the Wexford net as an unmarked Scheriff headed home a corner to put the visitors in front after 65 minutes.

Chances began to flow as Jarrett drew a gasp from the crowd as her well executed volley squeaked past the post, but by far Wexford Youths best chance to get back in the game was with 15 minutes left when Brophy broke clear into the box latching onto a fantastic lobbed pass, only to drag her shot agonisingly wide of the mark from only 8 yards out.

After that Wexford pushed for an equaliser but Athlone always looked the more dangerous on the break and this was proven through as with 87 minutes on the clock, Scheriff doubled her tally by sending one Wexford defender to the floor and slotting the ball into the bottom left hand corner from the edge of the area past Williams.

That would be enough to see Wexford off as Athlone cruised to victory. A fantastic win for the Town putting them into sixth place at Wexford’s expense. A hard fought game, it was a night of beautiful goals and rued chances for Wexford Youths who could have sorely used a win as they take on table toppers Peamount United away from home in their next fixture.
