DLR End Wait For Second Win Of Season With Strong Performance Over Sligo

DLR Waves secured their second win of the season, as second half goals from Sarah McKevitt and Michelle Doonan wrapped up the result at the UCD Bowl.

A game of few chances but DLR Waves will be happy with the result, they had missed opportunities in the tie but took their scores and will aim to build from this.

Sligo too had chances but lacked in front of goal, Jess Gleeson gave the hosts the lead with an additional time header from a corner in the first half, before McKevitt scored a freak long range free kick, before Doonan added the killer blow to put the tie to bed towards the end of play.

It was a slow burner of a start in Belfield, a lot of possession between the sides, but chances were few and far between, Oleta Griffin fired two free kicks for the hosts toward goal, one sailed over the other landed in the hands of Amy Mahon.

Sligo had little chances but Eve Badana was kept busy by shepherding her box to prevent any danger of a chance materialising, both teams were lacking a killer touch as it was a real feeling out process early on, Emma Doherty had the best Sligo chance after 24 minutes but her shot was wayward.

Waves were trying everything to break the deadlock but to no joy, after the half hour mark Neema Nyangansi tried a shot from range that went wide and Aoife Brophy also tried to hit the target from range but again it was off target.

Casey Howe would have the best Sligo chance in the opening half, but Badana showed her class and experience to get down well to save a rasper of a shot to keep the scores level. As the minutes wore on at the other end Katie Malone had a great chance to open the scoring before half time but her shot went wide.

The deadlock would soon be broken however, as from a corner Jess Gleeson rose highest to head home just before the break, giving Waves the ideal end to the opening half as they headed for the dressing room.

Into the second half Mahon was brave to deny Joy Ralph as the keeper hit the deck, she was off her line minutes later when Gleeson fancied a strike from range to lob her but it was wayward from just inside the Sligo half.

DLR pressed as Sligo had little in the way of a reply, it was a day for the substitutes to finish the tie, Sarah McKevitt struck a long range free kick that flew over Amy Mahon into the net, before Michelle Doonan added a third before the end with a cool finish to the back of the net.
