Match Report

Shelbourne Bounce Back With Emphatic Win Over Leaders Peamount

A fine second half performance from the defending champions saw Shels take all three points with a 4-1 win over Peamount United in PRL Park this evening.

An early Erin McLaughlin strike after a defensive lapse from the defending league champions had looked almost enough to give Peamount United the win but former Pea Megan Smyth Lynch hadn’t read the script.

Two second half goals from her along an inaugural goal for American signing Maggie Pierce and a late free kick from Alex Kavanagh gave the Red’s the best possible outcome.

There was only two minutes on the clock when a stray pass in the Shel’s defence was intercepted by McLaughlin and the 1-2 with Kate Mooney gave the Donegal native enough space to pick her spot from the edge of the box. The strike won’t be one that Red’s goalkeeper Courtney Maguire will want to see again.

Three minutes later it was almost two. Maguire came for a cross but couldn’t gather possession and the ball bounced at the feet of McLaughlin who snatched at the opportunity under pressure from Maguire and the ball went harmlessly wide.

Both side’s lost their shape somewhat through the second quarter of the game with unforced errors being the order of the day for both sides but Shelbourne in particular struggled to get themselves to the pace of the game. Peamount would have been the happier of the two camps at the interval.

Eight minutes into the second period it was almost level, a whipped cross from the left wing from former Pea Megan Smyth Lynch was met firmly by Kerri Letmon who was able to beat Reid Burke but the crossbar came to the rescue of the home side.

Just before the hour mark the sides were level. Megan Smyth Lynch applied some pressure to the Pea’s defence and she forced an error which saw her nick the ball and place the ball in the bottom corner past the advancing Reid Burke to give Shels an equaliser somewhat against the run of play.

After landing a blow it was once again Megan Smyth Lynch who would decide the game with a follow up strike fifteen minutes later. Good work between Murray and Letmon wide on the right saw Keeva Keenan swing the ball in. It evaded everyone until Smyth Lynch headed home with a diving header at the back post.

Maggie Pierce would make it 3-1 just two minutes later when the American opened her account with a fine effort from the edge of the box after more good industry from Murray.

Murray was withdrawn from the action by Noel King as tensions appeared to get heated and within immediately it was four. Alex Kavanagh struck a blistering free kick into the top corner to seal the win and keep the champions in close contention going into the international break.

  • 90'

It's slowed to a crawl here in the last few minutes as Shel's have broken the resolve of Peamount with their second half salvo as they will be delighted with the result from PRL Park this evening.

  • 79'

And it\'s four!!! A fine free kick from Alex Kavanagh sees the midfield maestro ensure the points are going back to Tolka Park with Shels. she finds the top corner and there is nothing Reid Burke could do with any of these goals.

  • 78'

Noelle Murray had been getting involved with opposing players and Noel King elects to withdraw her. She's replaced by Jemma Quinn for the last ten minutes or so.

  • 75'

Maggie Pierce has hit the final nail in the Peamount coffin. The American opened her account in the league with a fine effort from the edge of the box to complete the turnaround in PRL Park.

  • 73'

A fantastic goal from Megan Smyth Lynch has put the league champions ahead to potentially open the league title race wide open with less then twenty minutes left of this game. A back post header from a great deep cross from the right foot of Keeva Keenan.

  • 71'

Almost a goal at either end. Mooney dispossessed on the edge of the box by a great tackle before a break from Shels see Smyth Lynch shoot and Reid Burke is scrambling across her line but the ball goes harmlessly wide in the end.

  • 70'

Noelle Murray finds her name in the referee's book for a foul.

  • 69'

Doyle had the ball in the net but the assistant referee had the flag up for an offisde to rule it out.

  • 68'

Plenty of goals around the league this evening as only DLR haven't found the net so far. Shamrock Rovers lead 2-1 in Tallaght with Treaty and Cork level pegging. Athlone have pulled one back against Galway United and Bohs lead 2-0 against 10 player DLR Waves.

  • 63'

Shelbourne are now growing into the game and look the most likely to get a winner from here. Both sides are up for this now, whatever Noel King said at the break has had the desired effect.

  • 57'

And in a replica of the first goal, we are level. Megan Smyth Lynch capitalises on a defensive error to stroke the ball past the advancing Reid Burke to score against her former club.

  • 53'

Kerri Letmon has had the opportunity of the game for Shels with a firm effort at the end of a Smyth Lynch cross but the cross bar comes to the rescue with Reid Burke scrambling across her goal. This is better from the champions.

  • 49'

Shels have been reduced to long balls into the corners here. The speed of the Peamount rear guard is going to mop this up all day.

  • 45'

Shelbourne get us underway. Looks like no substitutions on either side at the break.

  • 45'

HALF TIME: PEAMOUNT UNITED 0-0 SHELBOURNE No stoppage time played in PRL Park as the match referee blows it on exactly 45 minutes. James O'Callaghan will be much the happier manager going into the dressing room at the break.

  • 44'

No appeals but a definite case for a Shelbourne penalty as Smyth-Lynch is caught mid shot. Former International keeper Reid Burke claims the resulting corner excellently.

  • 42'

Jessie Stapleton has been on the end of some close attention from Peamount players drawing a number of fouls but it's a crunching tackle from Pearl Slattery that finds the first card of the game.

  • 35'

Peamount playing it around and bossing the midfield here. A half cleared opportunity falls to Sadhbh Doyle but the Galway native can't get it on target from just outside the box.

  • 32'

Peamount looking like they have the measure of Shels here. First to nearly every loose ball. Peamount with a good bit of pressure now, but CArla McManus's cross evades all the green jerseys in the penalty area. Shels need to find another gear here to get back into the game and their title hopes.

  • 31'

In almost a carbon copy of the goal, Erin McLaughlin pounces on a loose defensive error. Her effort gets a deflection which takes the sting out of it and Budden gathers easily.

  • 29'

Both sides are beginning to give the ball away as the quality is dropping from both sides in the build up. Noelle Murray creates a chance for Alex Kavanagh but she can't get her effort on target from the edge of the box.

  • 27'

Shels again with the long cross into the box but Kerri Letmon just can't get on the end of the over hit pass. Shels enjoying a purple patch in the last five minutes or so.

  • 23'

Shels are beginning to threaten but a fabulous last ditch tackle from Tara O'Hanlon cuts out the chance for the champions.

  • 22'

The referee has a word with both Noelle Murray and Tara O'Hanlon as Shels begin to get a foothold in the game but they can't quite find the final ball to set their forwards loose.

  • 19'

Noel King is cutting a frustrated figure on the sideline as nothing is quite going for his side this evening. Reduced to long range set pieces but Shel's haven't managed to create a chance of note just yet.

  • 15'

Shels are finally looking like they are up for the game, with a few nice moves for the Reds so far, but it's been all Peamount so far. Great industry from the home side so far.

  • 10'

Peamount are well worth their lead. And it almost was two when Erin McLaughlin couldn't control her effort after Maguire couldn't hold a Peamount cross.

  • 8'

Great opportunity for the home side with a free kick on the corner of the box to be taken my Erin McLaughlin.

  • 4'

Phenomenal start for Peamount as Erin McLaughlin latches on to a poor pass in the Shels defence. Kate Mooney completes the quick 1-2 for McLaughlin to put past Maguire from well outside the box. Lauryn O'Callaghan nearly continued the Final Whistle good luck charm with a chance that fizzed past the post moments earlier.

  • And we are up and running as Peamount get us underway here in PRL Park.

  • It's very early in the season but defeat today for the visitors would leave them with an 8 point gap to bridge over the Peas going into the international break.

  • Captain Pearl Slattery starts for Shels after recovering from an injury sustained just a matter of days ago in the defeat to Galway United.

  • The teams are on the pitch at PRL Park as Peamount United host defending league champions Shelbourne. Kick off is in just under a half hour in west Dublin.
