Waves and Athlone Play Out Scoreless Draw In Belfield
DLR Waves and Athlone Town shared the spoils in Belfield today, as neither side managed to break the deadlock in a 0-0 draw.
In a match of very few chances and little action, ultimately neither side deserved the three points, making the result more than fair.
Muireann Devaney tried her luck for Athlone from well out less than 30 seconds in. The ball fell to the Leitrim native outside the area and she caught it on the half volley, but the effort was a routine stop for Eve Badana.
Madison Gibson met a cross well about ten minutes later. The ball came in from the right and the American rose high to meet it, but the contact was well under the ball and the effort sailed comfortably over.
DLR almost punished a sloppy piece of Athlone play a couple of minutes later. Julia Weithofer was dispossessed and a chance opened up, but the eventual effort was right at Nyla Peterkin.
Catherine Cronin could have had DLR in front in the 52nd minute. A ricochet fell her way and put her one on one with Peterkin. Athlone’s backup was reliable when called upon and came off her line quickly to deny the eventual effort.
The best chance for either side came in the 79th minute. A long ball forward from the Athlone defence was not dealt with by the DLR defence. Gibson got on the end of it and rounded an onrushing Bandana but as she was about to pull the trigger, had the ball nicked off her. Brilliant last ditch defending from DLR that made up for what happened moments prior.
Just a couple of minutes later Bronagh Kane went for the spectacular. The ball found its way to her at the back post and she chested it up before attempting the overhead, but sent her effort well over.
Michelle Doonan had the last good chance for either side in the 86th minute. Kayleigh Shine controlled a long ball poorly which allowed Doonan to get a shot off, but her effort was tame and right at Peterkin.
The last effort might have summed up this match for both sides. DLR will look to improve when they travel to Dalymount Wednesday to face a Bohs side coming off a loss. For Athlone, they welcome a Galway side to Lissywollen fresh off a great win in Tolka.

Kayleigh Shine controls a long DLR ball poorly and lets Michelle Doonan get an effort off. It's poor and right at Peterkin.
An effort from a DLR corner is just wide. Looked as if Peterkin slipped whilst diving to save it, so it was far from covered.

Ciara Glackin, who has started both games in goal so far for Athlone is out. Nyla Peterkin takes her place in the XI whilst Mary-Kate Maher takes her place on the bench. Singleton is also out for Athlone, which sees Kellie Brennan come into the XI.

Both of these sides have played two matches so far. Both sides have also won one and lost one, both to Peamount. Finally, both had their first win of the season last week. DLR bet Cork City 3-0 whilst Athlone Town hammered Treaty United 8-0.
