Match Report

Waves cruise to home victory over Cork

DLR Waves got off to the best possible start at home as they put Cork City to the sword with a 3-0 win at the UCD Bowl.

Early goals from Joy Ralph and Katie Malone sent DLR on their way and despite some spirited play for Cork City and even having a goal disallowed it was DLR who grabbed a third as Neema Nyangasi secured the points for Graham Kelly’s side in the final minutes of the second half.

DLR got off to the best possible start as Joy Ralph got possession out on the tight and spotted Hannah Walsh off her goal line and proceeded to strike a long-range effort that looped over the Cork goalkeeper to open the scoring. The home side was to add a second moments later as Isobel Finnegan's corner was met by Katie Malone at the front post and the unmarked Waves player slammed her header past Walsh to double DLR's lead. The waves were to continue to press for a third as Joy Ralph has another sight on goal after a ball was sent into the area, but her low effort was well saved by Walsh who gathered on the second attempt.

Cork City was to get into the contest and Eva Mangan got the ball on the edge of the area after some clever play but her effort just skimmed over the bar. Mangan was to have another chance as she skipped past several DLR defenders before trying to put the ball into the area, but the keeper gathered with ease. DLR had another sight on goal before halftime as Isobel Finnegans long curling effort is well saved by Walsh who had to gather on the second attempt.

DLR looked to add a third goal for the home side early in the second half as Joy Ralph had a shot on the edge of the area that looked certain to test the goalkeeper but it was blocked and then cleared. Cork City thought they had got a goal back as an excellent move from Mangan who played an excellent cross to Laura Shine who struck the ball into the net at the near post but the offside flag was raised.

Katie Malone almost added a second to her tally as she got the ball in the area but her low effort was well saved by Walsh. Chloe Atkinson was then to have a chance from the edge of the area but it is well saved also. DLR was to get a third as Neema Nyangasi bundled the ball over the line following hesitation from Walsh in the Cork goal and the pair clashed but the fall found itself in the back of the net and despite some initial confusion the goal stands.

The perfect start for DLR at home as Cork City is still without a win this season as they leave the capital with much to ponder for next week.

  • HEAD TO HEAD: DLR waves came out on top in all three games last season, emerging with a 3-0 win at Turner’s Cross between a pair of home wins. We need to go back to late 2021 for City’s last win over DLR waves when a Laura Shine hat-trick and a super team goal finished by Becky Cassin saw City run out 4-1 winners.

  • TEAM NEWS: Just one change to DLR's starting eleven to face Cork City as Sarah McKevitt misses out after taking a slight knock vs Peamount & has been replaced by Amber Cosgrove who makes her first start since moving up from our U19s. Vanessa Ogbonna & Bronagh Kane come into the matchday squad.
