Peas Come From Behind To Seal Opening LOIW Win
Peamount United won the final match of the WPD’s opening weekend with a 3-1 win over Athlone Town in Lissywollen tonight.
Chloe Singleton put the hosts ahead but a reply from Kate Mooney, one before the half from Erin McLaughlin and a late penalty from Kate Duggan saw the Peas run out as eventual winners.
This one started off in lively fashion. Just three minutes in, Athlone won a free out left after a Muireann Devaney high ball out left allowed Madison Gibson to apply pressure to Lauryn O’Callaghan. O’Callaghan committed a foul and Kayleigh Shine stepped up to take the free.
She swung it in with the right foot and Chloe Singleton rose highest and glanced the header in, netting in her league debut for Athlone. The joy wouldn’t last long for Athlone however.
Five minutes later, Athlone failed to win one of their own kickouts. Shauna Breenan was put under pressure in the corner and her ball back to Ciara Glackin lacked the requisite power for her keeper to get there first. Kate Mooney was first on the scene and slid it right by an onrushing Glackin to level it up.
For the next half hour or such it was fairly quiet. Both sides played good football at times, but Peamount managed to make a difference to the half time team talks.
Carla McManus got the ball outside the Athlone box and managed to dig out an awkward shot from under her feet. Her effort forced Glackin to pedal backwards and tip the effort over.
Glackin punched the following corner away but as Athlone were attempting to come out with the ball, Sadhbh Doyle won back possession for Peamount. She ran to the byline and crossed low. Athlone failed to deal with it and Erin McLaughlin eventually put it in, sending Peamount in at half time 1-0 up.
Athlone had a good chance to equalise in the 63rd minute when Brennan nutmegged her marker out left and found Devaney in oceans of space in the box. The ball was just too high however and Devaney got under it, sending it well over.
Ten minutes from time, this was a wrap. Peamount sent in a cross from the right and Julia Weithofer went to clear it. Mooney got there beforehand however and Weithofer was deemed to have brought her down. Karen Duggan stepped up and although Glackin guessed the right way, she found the net, putting a bow on this one.

Full time.
Four minutes added on.
Laurie Ryan is limping off in pain and will be replaced. An injury there would cap off a very bad evening for Athlone.
Goal! Duggan puts it in to surely wrap up the points!
Penalty! Weithofer attempts to clear a cross and takes down Mooney. Peamount can wrap it up here.
Athlone have a big pass-back call waved away. Hard to tell from this angle whether it's warranted or not.
Best chance for either side so far his half. Brennan nutmegs her marker out left and delivers a cross for Muireann Devaney, but it's just a little high and Devaney gets under it. Was wide open in the box.
There was a coming together off the ball between Madison Gibson and Chloe Moloney. Moloney ended up on the ground and the Peamount bench were livid. Both players have been booked.
Back underway.
Half time.
Goal! Peamount take the lead after Athlone fail to clear the corner and it's drilled across to Erin McLaughlin who fires in!
Closest either side have come since the equaliser. It's played to McManus on the edge of the area and she digs an awkward one out to get a shot off. Glackin pedals backwards and tips over.
Been quiet since the Peamount goal. Both sides showing moments of good football, but no concrete chances since the opening ten.
Goal! Kate Mooney equalises for Peamount after Shauna Brennan is dispossessed and she slips it by an onrushing Glackin. 1-1.
Devaney sent a high ball out left that Gibson gave chase to. She put Lauryn O'Callaghan under pressure, who fouled her. From the free, Shine sent in a right footed cross and Singleton managed to make great contact with the ball.
Goal! Kayleigh Shine whips it in from a free out left and Singelton glances it on for an early lead!
Devaney is in behind for an effort but it's a half chance. Still, decent play from the hosts.
And we're off.
Teams are out. Kickoff in a couple of minutes.
Ciara Glackin gets the start in the Athlone net after her two penalty saves last week. Former Town keeper Niamh Coombes in on the Peamount bench.
Athlone Town are coming off a Presidents Cup win over Shelbourne this time last week, so have gotten a run out in a competitive game already. Peamount on the other hand could give us our first real glimpse into a side that has seen some turnover.
The teams are now in.
