O’Gorman Late Winner Seals Winning Rovers Return To LOIW
Shamrock Rovers star studded side just about secured an opening day win as the Bit O’Red almost held out for a draw, an injury time header from Aine O’Gorman saw them emerge with all three points in this League of Ireland Women’s Premier Division clash at The Showgrounds.
Shauna Fox had opened the scoring early before a deflected Emma Hansberry free kick deceived Amanda Budden to level matters on the hour mark somewhat against the run of play before O’Gorman’s late strike settled matters.
The visiting fans didn’t have long to wait for the opening score of the game as Shauna Fox finished coolly to the top of the Sligo Rovers net after just eight minutes.
A training ground corner routine from Stephanie Roche and Aine O’Gorman before the Puskas nominee whipped in a cross. Fox’s effort at the back post was blocked before Alannah McEvoy too saw her strike diverted but Fox was unmarked at the back post to ensure the finish as the ball dropped at her feet.
Shamrock Rovers dominated possession for the remainder of the half creating opportunities at will but the front four of Larkin, McEvoy, Zambra and O’Gorman just could not apply the finish on a number of occasions. With Aoife Kelly, Zambra both hitting efforts over the bar from distance.
A dubious free kick for a foul on Emma Doherty saw Hansberry step up to strike the free kick. Her effort found the wall but the force carried it past Budden and the ball trickled into the net.
At the mid point of the second half, Abbie Larkin had a glorious chance to restore the favourites lead as she latched on to a glorious pass from O’Gorman but Sligo keeper Mahon was on top form to save at her feet.
The visitors rained down shots on Mahon’s goal but were unable to find the breakthrough as Collie O’Neill made late substitutions to chase the game.
Shamrock Rovers peppered Mahon’s goal for fifteen minutes but were reduced to long distance efforts which never really looked like restoring their lead before Lia O’Leary’s last gasp cross was met by O’Gorman in a crowd who calmly found the net from close range.
Collie O’Neill will be delighted with his side’s response to a tough opening fixture where despite dominating for long periods they struggled to make that count on the scoreboard.

The Showgrounds - Sligo Rovers F.C., Magheraboy Road, Knappagh Beg, Sligo, Sligo Municipal Borough District, County Sligo, Connacht, F91 P523, Ireland |
Aine O'Gorman has popped up as so often before to seal a win for her team as Shamrock Rovers look to have stolen this at the end.
Four minutes added time as the atmosphere heats up on a cold Sligo evening.
Helen Monaghan enters the action to replace debutant Casey Howe who has been impressive on her first introduction to the Showgrounds crowd.
It's all pressure from the Hoops here as they go in search of a winner. Can't write off the home side as they look dangerous on the break.
Jess Gargan has replaced Melissa O'Kane on the Shamrock Rovers side.
Amy Mahon is receiving treatment as she took a knock when collecting a through ball.
The home side almost make the breakthrough as Jodie Loughrey finds Doherty in space on the left wing. Her effort was blocked as she shaped to shoot on Budden's goal.
Keri Loughrey joins her sister Jodie on the field as Steve Feeney tries to freshen up the side. She replaces Leah Kelly at the back for the home team.
Amy Mahon show's why she's the first name on the Sligo teamsheet as she pulls off a phenomenal save at the feet of Abbie Larkin. A great through ball from Aine O'Gorman had set her International team mate in on goal.
Jodie Loughrey for Katie Melly
Stephanie Zambra is replaced by Jaime Thompson.
Against the run of play the home side are level. In a mirror image of last year's opening goal Emma Hansberry hits a free kick and it found the back of Budden's net with the assistance of a massive deflection off the defensive wall.
Sligo are beginning to settle as a Emma Hansberry corner finds a Sligo player at the back post but her effort goes harmlessly wide.
A beautiful turn from Casey Howe gives a glimpse into her ability as her quick turn and pass almost releases Doherty up front for the Bit O'Red but it's cut out by a Rovers defender.
Goal chances are like buses in this game, A decent through ball finds Alannah McEvoy who's run bearing in on goal gives her a free shot but she can't keep her effort under control and the ball fizzes past the post.
And the home crowd are on their feet at the start of the second half as two Shamrock Rovers defenders get in each other's way and Katie Melly nips between them to create a chance for herself. A combination of Melissa O'Kane and keeper Budden applied enough pressure to close down the opportunity.
Shamrock Rovers have been the dominant side in this first half, an early goal threatened to open the floodgates but Sligo Rovers have been able to cope with their attacks without ever really looking like scoring themselves. Steve Feeney will be the happiest manager in the dressing room for half time.
Sligo almost make a breakthrough as a poor backpass is almost snapped on by Emma Doherty but Amanda Budden is equal to the challenge and clears the danger for the visitors.
Stephanie Zambra has a snap shot from the edge of the box which doesn't bother Mahon as the visitors continue to dominate proceedings here.
This time it's the other side that's causing the problems for Sligo. Alanna McEvoy beats the full back for pace but her cross is cut out for a corner. Zambra's corner has the defence in shreds but Fox's header comes back off the bar.
Shamrock Rovers almost double their advantage with a great run down the wing by O'Gorman who finds McEvoy with a cut back but she's forced to play it back to Kelly on the edge of the box but she doesn't bother Mahon in the goal.
Shauna Fox has scored the first goal for Shamrock Rovers as she calmly finished at the second attempt. A well worked corner routine from Stephanie Zambra and Aine Gorman found fox at the back post. Her effort was blocked but returned by Alannah McEvoy as Fox took her time and hit the top of the net from close range.
First opportunity for Shamrock Rovers as they break down the left wing, the cut back to Stephanie Zambra sees the experienced forward not able to make a decent contact with the ball and her effort goes just wide of the far post.
And we are underway here in the Showgrounds as the home side get us underway.
