Rossiter Spoils Galway Party in Eammon Deacy

Wexford Youths spoiled Galway United's party with a late winner to secure a win in their opening tie of the season.

After a great well contested game Ciara Rossiter broke the deadlock after 80 minutes after she latched onto a loose touch from the Galway defence as she finished nicely into the bottom right corner.

Galway United will be disappointed to not have got anything from their first outing!

It was a momentous day in Eamonn Deacy park as Galway United’s women's team took to the field for the first time in front of their home crowd.

Galway may have been suffering from nerves in the early exchanges as Wexford seemed to get on top early on.

Ciara Rossiter had a free kick after 6 minutes sail over the bar and just three minutes later some sloppy play saw Michaela Lawrence go through on goal but she scuffed her effort.

Gemma McGuinness had Galway first effort of note in the game, her long speculative effort well saved by Wexford keeper Maeve Williams.

Galway grew into the half and started to control the tempo of the match after the 35th minute markand could have been disappointed to not be 1-0 up going in at the break as Jamie Erickson had the ball in the net but was judged to have been offside with 43 minutes on the clock.

Both sides had opportunities but the sides went in level at the break.

Whatever nerves Galway had during the first half were left in the dressing room during the half time break as they came out the blocks quickly during the early stages of the second half.

With an increase of intensity and attacking emphasis United were on the front foot.

Lynsey McKey had their first major chance of the half as her effort from outside the box just narrowly went over the bar.

Galway seemed to run out of steam in the latter stages of the game and Wexford took full advantage.

A mistake at the back for United saw Ciara Rossiter latch onto a loose ball 25 yards out she sprang into action and finished confidently into the bottom right hand corner.

Wexford used their experience to see out the remaining 10 minutes emptying their bench and putting Galway under pressure at every opportunity.

A brilliant result for the Away side as they take all three points back to the South east, disappointment for Galway on their first match out but they will learn from this and grow as the season goes on.
