Pierrot scores brace and saw red on debut as Athlone beat Longford
A brace from Frantz Pierrot saw Athlone Town earn the bragging rights in this Midlands ‘El Clasico’. Pierrot’s celebration after his second goal saw him sent off for a second bookable offence.
He had given Athlone the lead in the 26th minute but the home side drew level four minutes before the break through Darragh Lynch. Jamar Campion-Hinds got Athlone’s second goal in the 61st minute and three minutes later Pierrot grabbed his second goal and his side’s third.
Sam Verdon’s 77th-minute penalty was saved by Athlone keeper Enda Minogue.
Played in front of a crowd of 1,514 there was nothing of note created by either side in the opening exchanges as passing went astray and final touches were poor.
Aodh Dervin’s free came back to Viktor Serdeniuk but his stunning strike came off the crossbar in the 25th minute. One minute later the visitors broke the deadlock through Pierrot. Aaron Connolly played the ball to him and the forward found the net with an excellent finish.
The home side came back into the game. Joshua Giurgi with a lovely cross but Ross Fay headed over from close range. They continued to press and in the 41st minute grabbed an equaliser. Shane Elworthy’s ball was cleared and it fell to Darragh Lynch who made no mistake from inside the box.
Four minutes after the break Athlone keeper Minogue was called into action to make a super save to deny Verdon who struck a fantastic free-kick.
Athlone were back in front in the 61st minute when Donal Curtin’s ball found the head of Jamar Campion Hinds and his looping header went past Jack Brady. Minutes later Pierrot got his and Athlone’s third goal.
In his celebration, he lifted his shirt up and was shown a second yellow card and then a red by referee Eoghan O’Shea. Mohamed Boudiaf shot over in the 74th minute. Three minutes later Jamil Ibrahim was brought down by German Fuentes Rodriguez and a penalty was awarded. Verdon stepped up but his spot-kick was saved by Athlone netminder Minogue.
