Match Report

Dundalk take Louth derby bragging rights

In a nail-biting and dramatic match at Weavers Park, Dundalk was pinned to their collar for the majority of the contest, but a Connor Malley goal handed the Lilywhites the full three points.

Drogheda will leave the field tonight feeling as though they should have at least earned a point. It appeared as though they had it, but Nathan Sheppard denied Freddie Draper from the penalty spot in the final moments of the contest. The true test of a good side is when they win games while playing poorly in some stretches. Tonight, Dundalk accomplished that.

The game was played vigorously by the home side, and Dale Rooney's fine effort on the edge of the area was the first shot of note for Drogheda. However, Nathan Sheppard made a strong save on the effort. Another excellent opportunity presented itself for Drogheda when Freddie Draper was found at the back post by a corner; however, Draper's wayward header caused it to skim the top of his head and away from harm.

Dayle Rooney was the next to put the Dundalk defence to the test. He turned and moved quickly to receive the ball to his left, then curled a great shot that Sheppard superbly saved. The greatest opportunity of the first half belonged to Darragh Markey, who stole the ball and beat Sheppard with his shot before the goalkeeper somehow managed to tip it over the crossbar.

The ensuing corner caused havoc as it fell to Weir's feet, where his effort took a significant deflection. On the subsequent corner's second ball, Darragh Leahy had to clear the ball away from his goal line. For Dundalk Johannes Yli-Kokko escaped his defender's attention and registered the Lilywhites first shot on target, it was almost the end of the half before that happened as the goal-bound shot took a deflection and was easily saved.

Drogheda began the second half right where they left off with a cross from the right in the opening minute found Emmanuel Adegboyega who headed powerfully towards goal but his effort is well saved. They were to continue to press as Dayle Rooney received the ball out on the left and his deep cross into the Dundalk area saw the ball clip the post and over the bar. Against the run of play Dundalk were to take the lead as Rayhann Tulloch got away from his marker for only the second time on the night, he left him for dead and cuts a clever pass to Connor Malley and the Dundalk midfielder applied the finish as he slammed it past McCabe with a goal that was completely against the run of play.

Drogheda thought they had found a way back in it as Darragh Leahy fouled Grimes and the referee pointed to the spot. Freddie Draper stood up to take it and his effort was low and to the right but it was superbly saved by Sheppard pushing it away and wide. Dundalk continued to press for a second late on and a break found Robbie Benson in the Drogheda area unmarked only for his effort to clip the post.

SECOND HALF: We are back underway for the second half of the Louth Derby.

  • 45'

HALF TIME: right on the stroke of half time there was a penalty shout but it would have been harsh on Dundalk. All in all this half belonged to the home side with Dayle Rooney looking the real livewire in this half.

  • 13'

Not sure what to make of this one, a great cross was sent into the area and it looked as if a Drogheda player fell over but there were mute calls albeit from the crowd for a penalty. There is now a corner to Drogheda that is cleared by Davies.

  • 7'

CLOSE: It looked as if Weir played in Draper but he overhits the pass to the striker and it goes wide.

  • 4'

TIGHT: As far as openings go this has been a tight affair, very little given between the sides but it looks as if they are double marking Rayhann Tulloch, they have spotted him as a clear danger.

  • 1'

KICK OFF: And we are underway and Dundalk immediately win a corner which is headed clear at the near post and collected on the second ball.

  • DEALY: A few seconds behind schedule here as the referee lets the smoke clear from the smoke of the flares from both sides.
