Quality Derry overrun Students at the Bowl

Derry City continued their impressive start to their 2023 SSE Airtricity League Premier Division season with a comfortable 4-0 away victory against UCD AFC at the UCD Bowl this evening.

A first-half brace from the impressive Jordan McEneff and second-half goals from Ollie O’Neill and Will Patching condemned the Students to their third defeat of the season while strengthening the Candystripes’ title claims early in the season.

After a quiet opening few minutes, a moment of real quality from McEneff opened the scoring. The midfielder was also involved in the build-up as he fed Graydon to his left whose darting run into the area allowed the winger to register Derry’s first shot on target. Lorcan Healy was alive to the danger, however, and got down to make the save. The ball fell kindly to McEneff outside the box who hit a beautiful shot into the far top right corner giving Healy no chance.

Both teams looked tired after their games on Friday night, particularly UCD who struggled to offer much going forward. Connolly and McEleney were solid in the air against Alex Nolan who was moved to a more unfamiliar role leading the line for the hosts. Derry dominated the ball, largely thanks to the quality of Patching and Diallo in the middle who managed to retain their quality on the ball in spite of the far-from-perfect UCD pitch.

The Candystripes doubled their lead minutes before halftime with McEneff once again finding the back of the net. On this occasion, a well-controlled clearance out of defence found Brandon Kavanagh in plenty of space to turn and play a lovely ball into the path of McEneff. The midfielder beat Healy to it and knocked the ball around the UCD keeper before poking home.

UCD emerged after the break a little more competitive and finally tested Brian Maher in the Derry net with a couple of dangerous set-piece deliveries from Behan and Norris. However, the game was put beyond doubt at the 65th-minute mark when Lorcan Healy spilt a routine pickup which allowed the substitute Ollie O’Neill to tap home with practically his first touch of the game.

The away side were not done there, however. Will Patching got his name on the scoresheet with a free kick with a quarter of an hour remaining. His delivery went through a few bodies and took a deflection or two before nestling into the far back post to complete the rout.

Alan Reynolds, who was taking control of the Derry dugout tonight will be very satisfied to take home all three points and a clean sheet to go with it. Next up for Derry City is a home tie against Dundalk at the Brandywell on Friday while UCD host Drogheda United in Belfield.

  • 90'

3 additional minutes here at the Bowl.

  • 86'

Derry seem happy to let the Students control much of the possession without getting near the goal. Many travelling fans' eyes are glued to events at Tallaght!

  • 81'

Harry O'Connor is introduced in place of Norris. UCD getting more of a foothold on the ball here as the game nears its conclusion.

  • 76'

Goalscorer Patching is then replaced by McLaughlin.

  • 75'

And that's 4! A Patching freekick goes through several bodies with at least one deflection and finds the far post.

  • 72'

More subs! Kinsella-Bishop and Izekor replace Nolan and Keane.

  • 70'

Another double change for Derry as Coll and Ward enter the fray.

  • 65'

Ollie O'Neill won't score an easier goal again in his career and Healy won't want to see that one again. The UCD keeper spills a routine pick up and it's 3-0 Derry.

  • 64'

Double change for Derry as McGonigle and O'Neill replace Cian and Brandon Kavanagh.

  • 62'

Just over from Kavanagh! Excellent play from Boyce down the right flank and UCD are slow to clear giving Kavanagh a chance to shoot but it's too high.

  • 60'

Excellent football from UCD, particularly Higgins earns UCD a freekick on the edge of the D. Keaney blasts the effort over the bar, however,

  • 57'

Ciarán Behan gets the Students\' first yellow of the game.

  • 56'

Another deep freekick causes trouble for Derry as O'Brien almost gets on the end of an excellent delivery.

  • 53'

The game has settled largely back into the same pattern as the first half. Norris and Dignam have switched wings for UCD to shake things up.

  • 48'

First save of the game for Maher as a deep freekick finds a UCD head but the Derry keeper does well to hold on to the ball.

  • 46'

No changes for either side at the break. Events in Tallaght stadium were the talk of the terrace at halftime where Cork City lead the Hoops 2-1. "Rovers are going down!" was overheard chanted near the chipper van!

  • 45'

Alex Nolan gets us back underway for the home side.

  • 45'

Halftime here at the Bowl. McEneff gets the first booking of the game just before the interval

  • 40'

Jordan McEneff doubles Derry\'s lead and his tally for the evening. A well-controlled ball out of defence finds Brandon Kavanagh in plenty of space to turn and play a lovely ball into the path of McEneff. The midfielder beats Healy to it and knocks the ball around the UCD keeper before poking home.

  • 38'

Plenty of fouls are breaking up the rhythm of the game. UCD not offering much going forward as Connolly and McEleney are winning everything in the air,

  • 32'

Maher is finally worked as he is alive to the danger as Higgins attempts to slide in Norris with a neat ball which splits the Derry defence but the Ireland under 21 international is quick to get to the ball first.

  • 30'

It's been a tight turnaround since Friday for both teams and it shows. The game hasn't been played at the highest tempo in the opening half an hour with Derry content to hold possession and maintain their lead.

  • 23'

Excellent Derry build-up down the left flank results in Patching darting for the byline but Keaney makes an excellent low tackle to snuff out any danger.

  • 22'

Plenty of possession but not much else for the Candystripes who look very comfortable in the opening stages.

  • 14'

Derry take the lead and what a strike it is! McEneff feeds Graydon whose shot is well saved by Healy but it falls back to McEneff who curls the ball beautifully into the far corner.

  • 7'

Diallo is getting plenty of space in the middle and finds Boyce on this occasion. His low cross is well-cleared for a corner which comes to nothing.

  • 5'

Patching goes low and the wall does it's job.

  • 5'

Early freekick in a dangerous position for Derry. O'Brien was judged to have committed the foul 25 yards from the goal.

  • 1'

The away side gets us underway!

  • Early days, of course, but it's top versus bottom this evening. Derry will be full of confidence after beating the current champions while UCD face the daunting task of turning around their fortunes after a thumping 4-0 defeat to Cork City just 3 days ago. Kickoff is fast approaching here!

  • It\'s been raining most of the day here at Belfield and with a rugby game taking place at the Bowl on Saturday, it makes for a pitch not suited for tika-taka football. Far cry from the 3G pitch at the Brandywell!

  • Meanwhile, it's 4 changes for the travelling Candystripes. Boyce, McEneff and Cian and Brandon Kavanagh are introduced to replace Coll, McGonigle, McEleney and O'Neill.

  • Teams are already live here and it's two changes for the home side from their disappointing 4-0 defeat away to Cork City. Daniel Norris and Jessie Dempsey replace Michael Gallagher and Danu Kinsella-Bishop.

  • Good evening and welcome to FinalWhistle.ie coverage of UCD AFC vs Derry City in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division. I'm Conor Paterson and I'll be bringing you live updates from the UCD Bowl as well as a full match report after the game.
