Match Report

Doyle Delights Richmond Audience With Late Winner

A late Eoin Doyle goal proved to be the difference as St. Pat’s edged out Shelbourne in a Dublin derby of few chances at Richmond Park.

The substitute fired home a break of the ball from a corner to ensure the Saints begin their season with four points out of six, although Shels will be disappointed to come away with nothing from the game.

It was a first half were clear-cut efforts were few and far between. The hosts dominated possession but struggled in the final third to create an opening. The visitor’s best spells came when they released John-Ross Wilson down the right. The fullback was never tracked by Jake Mulraney before he switched wings with Serge Atakayi and it was the same.

It was Mulraney, however, who was Pat’s most threatening player as the winger looked to run at the Shels defence at every opportunity.

Former Saints defender Paddy Barrett channeled his inner David Beckham as the centre-half had an attempt from the half-way line, which was on target, however, easily collected by Odumosu.

The Saints went closest on the stroke of half time when Jamie Lennon’s effort was blocked inside the Shels penalty area before defender Noah Lewis turned and swiveled although his effort was deflected and trickled past the post.

The second half produced more of the same with both sides again, poor in the final third. Shels had better spells of possession in the Saints’ half, although numerous corners came to nothing.

The game changed when substitute Eoin Doyle found himself in the right spot at the right time and he made no mistake to send the Richmond faithful wild.

Shels tried desperately to salvage something from the game and must have almost thought they did when other former Saints man Kyle Robinson struck the crossbar from a header in a very unlucky effort.

The hosts held on for a precious three points and now move onto Dundalk away next Friday night, whilst Shelbourne move onto Waterford in the Leinster Senior Cup before another Dublin derby against Bohemians.

The attendance tonight was 4,930.

  • 30'

No chances for either side. Pat's with more of the ball but lacking in the final third. Shels do look dangerous on the break if they can also just be better in that final third.

  • 25'

A nice spell for the visitors in the last five minutes but, no clear cut chances for them yet. Lennon tries to slip Forrester in behind for the home side but the pass is overhit and goes out for a goal kick. Barrett is spoken to by Neil Doyle following a clash with Mulraney.

  • 10'

Mulraney charges down the left before his cross is deflected and Shels eventually clear. Mulraney looks lively already in the opening exchanges running at the Shels defence.
