LOI PD Report: Drogs and Shels play out Tolka Park stalemate

Shels and Drogheda Utd played out a scoreless draw in their opening Premier Division with there being more yellow cards dished out than decent chances created.

In the opening half Freddie Draper had a great opportunity to break the deadlock for the visitors while Sean Boyd’s effort came off the post after Shels broke.

In the second half Paddy Barrett’s header from a Tyreke Wilson free came off the crossbar.

The last time these two sides met Shels put six past Colin McCabe but there was no worry of history repeating itself in Tolka Park tonight. Despite the sides having chances neither keeper was called into make a save of note.

The visitors settled in well and played some good football. They had a great chance to open the scoring in the 20th minute. Draper capitalised on a defensive mistake from Shels, he chipped the ball over Shels keeper Conor Kearns but it landed on the roof of the net.

Out of nothing Shels had a chance in the 22nd minute to break the deadlock. Boyd broke and raced through, he played the ball wide to Matty Smith who somehow missed from close range. It was a glaring miss from Smith.

Conor Keeley headed straight at Kearns in the 26th minute and three minutes later Boyd saw his fine strike hit the butt of the post. As the half wore on Shels created more chances with Jack Moylan involved in a lot of their good play but they couldn’t find a way past McCabe.

In the 69th minute a free-kick from Tyreke Wilson met the head of Paddy Barrett but his effort came off the crossbar.

Shels began to pile on the pressure and enjoyed possession but were sloppy in their passing and Drogs were able clear any danger. Gavin Molloy tried his luck in the 87th minute but his shot was blocked down as Drogs defence were resolute with Conor Keeley a rock.

In stoppage time Draper headed the ball down to Adam Foley but his strike was wide as both sides had to settle for a share of the spoils.
