Match Report

LOI PD Report: Bohemians collect all three points on Leeside

Goals from Grant Horton and Jordan Flores ensured Declan Devine’s side opened this season with a deserved but nervy 2-1 victory against Cork City at Turners Cross.

Perhaps as expected, it was cagey opening with both sides attempting to regain match sharpness on opening night.

Bohs’ had the first chance of the game in the 6th minute when Ali Coote’s header forced Celtic loanee Tobi Oluwayemi to tip the ball over his crossbar.

The visitors went close again two minutes later when an overlap was created but Adam McDonnell could only flash his shot across the face of goal.

Despite these missed chances, the warning signs were there for Colin Healy’s side who looked nervous in front of a sell out Turners Cross crowd.

Those warning were realised in the 18th minute when Coote’s short corner set play was headed home by loanee Grant Horton to send the 700 travelling supporters into ecstasy.

The second quarter was a little bit more subdued as Bohs’ continued to dominate the ball. Tunde Owolabi was the one bright spark for City who resorted to long balls in counter attacks in the first half.

The second period left off where the first began as Bohs continued to look the more threatening although they did lose Israel Akintunde to a hamstring injury.

Their fortunes quickly turned however as Jordan Flores doubled Bohs’ lead in the 53rd minute when Oluwayemi miscalculated the direction of his shot to effectively end the game as a contest.

City attempted to reality in the middle third with Albin Wimbo and Cian Bargary both having half chances with the home crowd struggling to get into the game.

Similar to the second goal, it was goalkeepers mistake that led to City getting back into the game as Ruairí Keating capitalised on some loose play from James Talbot make it 2-1.

Despite a nervy climax in which Paddy Kirk and James Talbot had clear balls off the line, Bohs’ held on for a deserved 2-1 victory over a City side who looked a slightly overawed by the occasion.

James Clarke and Dean Williams on for Afolabi and Coote for Bohs.

  • 70'

Better from City as Cian Bargary's cross has to be put out for a corner which doesn't come to anything however.

  • 67'

Turners Cross is eerily quiet which is unsurprising considering the home support have had nothing to shout about.

  • 60'

  • 55'

Wimbo goes close from a free kick for City who desperately need to create a few more chances.

  • 47'

Great move by Buckley to Akintunde whose header just misses wide of the mark.

    Back underway.

  • Teams out for the second half.

  • Half-time and its Bohemians who take a deserved 1-0 lead into the break. Colin Healy will be disappointed with what he's from his side who have lacked creativity and sharpness so far.

  • 42'

Owalabi wins a corner for City after a good break down the left flank but the resulting effort is blocked down.

First City attack in a while ends with Custovic's cross blocked by Buckley. Interestingly Bohs have completed 159 passes compared to City's 39.

  • 30'

All the singing is coming from the away section right now with Bohs looking in complete control of the ball and the indeed the game after the first half hour.

  • 23'

Nice play again from the visitors which ends in a Coote shot which is straight at Oluwayemi.

  • 19'

Loanee Grant Horton heads home from an excellent corner set play from Ali Coote to give the Bohs a 1-0 lead.

  • 14'

Bohs definitely enjoying the majority of the possession so far with City looking to hit on the break.

  • 8'

Adam McDonnell should have done better moments ago for the visitors. They create a 3 on 2 overlap but he flashes his shot across the face of goal with the net at his mercy.

  • 6'

First corner of the game goes to Bohs. It eventually leads to a flick on from Coote which forces Owulaymi to tip the ball over his bar.

  • 3'

Shouts for a City penalty as Tundi Oluwabe goes down as the ball rolls just past James Talbot's far post from a dangerous Cian Bargary throw in.

  • 1'

    Underway.

  • Teams out onto the ptich, atmosphere is electric.
