Match Report

Rovers disappointed to draw with Gent

Gent came from behind to draw with 10-man Shamrock Rovers tonight in Tallaght as the Hoops will rue the fact they did not pick up their first European group stage win.

Rovers were in control of the tie from the opening minutes when Gaffney put the Hoops in front. Ferizaj was shown a second yellow with 15 to go and De Buffalo equalised within seconds.

Rovers now travel to Sweden to face Djurgardens in their final Conference League fixture looking for their first victory in the tournament, albeit for pride as they are confirmed to finish bottom of the group with tonight's loss.

Rovers made a flying start against Molde in the last round at home and Greene missed a major opportunity early on but this time things worked out better for the Dublin side.

Less than three minutes were on the clock when Richie Towell picked the ball up from Farrugia and dinked the ball off his right foot towards the back post and found Gaffney who headed home from close range.

Gent immediately looked to get back into the game but it was Gaffney and Rovers once more who came closest. The Galway man hit a half volley from range that was destined for the bottom corner but touched onto the post by Nardi in the Gent net.

De Buffalo got their first real attempt of the game on the 20-minute mark. Former Huddersfield man Laurent Depoitre attempted to smash home from close range but Mannus was on hand to make a reflex save to keep his team in the lead.

Dylan Watts and Chris McCann were both withdrawn with injuries in the opening half by Stephen Bradley. The incredibly congested fixture congestion potentially starting to take its toll on this Rovers team.

Gent pushed towards the end of the half and next it was Hjulsager who came close. forcing Mannus into an acrobatic save as it remained the Hoops leading by one at the break.

Rovers looked good throughout the early stages of the second half as they showed once more in this campaign that they are a team of quality that can compete in Europe. Gent however it must be said playing below their abilities, a team that have been struggling domestically thus far this season and one would never think were fighting for their Conference League lives in Dublin tonight.

Eintracht Frankfurt loanee Jens Petter Hauge was withdrawn on the hour mark for the away side, without making any impact in the game at all.

The Hoops were cruising towards a potential first ever European Group Stage victory when the game flipped on its head. Justin Ferizaj was shown a second yellow card for a late tackle and the hosts were reduced to ten.

Immediately afterward Gent equalised. Hyunseok Hong was on hand to smash home unmarked in the box off a Bruno Godeau cross from the left-hand side. A breakdown in communication after the red card left the space for Hong to charge into and within 60 seconds of being reduced a man they had conceded.

Rovers would hold on and pick up their second point of the competition but this was really a tale of two points dropped rather than one gained tonight.
