Shamrock Rovers suffer first European home defeat of the season
Goals in each half from David Fofana and Kristian Eriksen saw Molde end Shamrock Rovers unbeaten home record in Europe this season and also their chance of advancing to the knock-out stages of the Europa Conference League.
Rovers had plenty of chances in the opening half but their poor finishing was punished in the 33rd minute when Fofana headed past Alan Mannus.
Stephen Bradley’s side continued to carve out opportunities but couldn’t put them away and in the 69th minute substitute Eriksen doubled his side’s advantage.
Just two minutes had elapsed when Rovers created their opening chance of the game; Richie Towell with a pinpoint cross to Aaron Greene but he somehow directed his shot wide, when in a perfect position to score.
On 14 minutes Ronan Finn brought a save out of Molde keeper Jacob Karlstrom. Rovers continued to pile on the pressure and in the 30th minute, Greene’s effort was pushed away by Karlstrom.
Rovers were to rue not putting away their chances in the 33rd minute. Emil Breivik with the cross to the lively Fofana and he headed past Mannus. Fofana was offside when the ball was played in but no flag went up. It was tough luck on Rovers.
The home side tried to get back into the game but in the 42nd minute Molde broke and Fofana raced through only to be denied a second goal by a brilliant save from Mannus.
Rovers created the first opportunity of the second half in the 54th minute; Towell brought a save out of the Molde netminder. Down the other end, Mannus saved from Breivik.
Mannus denied substitute Magnus Wolff Eikrem in the 68th minute and from the resulting corner another substitute, Eriksen headed home and it appeared no way back for Rovers. They did have the ball in the back of the net in the 71st minute but Greene’s effort was ruled out for offside.
Credit to Rovers, they continued to create chances and played some good football but couldn’t get the goal their performance deserved. They have yet to score a goal in this competition.
