Waterford see off Malahide United to advance to Quarters
Waterford defeated non-league Malahide United 6-0 to secure their spot in the FAI Cup quarterfinals at Gannon Park. Shane Griffin, Roland Idowu, Wassim Aouachria, and Phoneix Patterson all scored in the first half to give the Blues a commanding lead at the break.
Malahide put in a strong second half performance but were unable to prevent Darragh Power and Wassim Aouachria with this second getting late goals to add further gloss to the score.
When Phoenix Patterson received a pass from Junior and found himself one on one with Malahide goalkeeper Dylan McNulty, the early warning signs from the away side were there. However, Patterson's shot missed the target. The Blues didn't have to wait long to have another chance to score as Shane Griffin skillfully floated the ball over McNulty with a deft touch after a ball sent over the top fell to his feet. About 90 seconds later, Roland Idowu added a second goal. He picked up the ball on the edge of the box, turned, and unleashed a superb strike that found the back of the net.
Patterson placed Colm Deasy under pressure, and when he attempted to send the ball back to McNulty, Wassim Aouachira intercepted it and blasted it beyond the out-of-position goalkeeper to give Waterford a third goal. The next phase of the play presented the home team with their best opportunity, but Karl O'Callaghan's well-struck shot blazed over the crossbar in a rare sight on goal for United. After a clever free-kick move involving Griffin and Patterson, a fourth goal for the visitors was added at the half-hour mark. The striker's superb right-footed drive beat McNulty at his near post following the clever one-two.
Juniors' cross into the Malahide area struck the back post and bounced back to Idowu to begin the second half exactly like the first, but his attempt missed the mark and went for a corner. Karl O'Callaghan had an attempted shot from inside the Waterford area, but it narrowly missed the goal. Griffin picked up the ball from a short corner, and McNulty was called upon once more to make a stop. On the edge of the area, Griffin had another opportunity, but Colm Deasy stopped his shot from going in.
Darragh Power late in the game added a fifth as Cantwell met Patterson's corner and headed it toward the goal, but Power was there to add the decisive touch. Late in the game, Cantwell crossed the ball short to his path, and Wassim Aouachria applied the finish to score the sixth goal for his side and made sure Waterford went home with the decisive victory.

SAVE: McNulty called into action again as Griffin picked up the ball from a short corner but his effort was well saved.
Another chance for Power as he headed goalwards for a corner but it just went wide.
CHANCE: Patterson's free-kick was nearly met at the back post by Power but he couldn't get the vital touch.
Two changes for United: Jack Doyle comes on for Mark Brennan and Jamie McGlynn is replaced by Karl Melling.
A double change for Waterford: Yassine En-Neyah and Dean Larkin replace Niall O’Keeffe and Richard Taylor.

SECOND HALF: We are back underway at Gannon Park - Sam Simpson kicks us off.
HALF TIME: It's been mostly one-way traffic as Waterford has a commanding 4-0 lead. Goals from Shane Griffin, Roland Idowu, Wassim Aouachria and Phoneix Patterson give the blues a strong lead and position to make it to the Quarter Final. Malahide has been compact and hard-working but has just come up short against this strong Waterford outfit.
CLOSE: Shane Griffin from the follow-up corner latches onto the ball on the edge of the area and his effort blazes over the bar.
OFF THE LINE: Patterson with some excellent footwork in the area but his shot gets cleared off the line by Deasy.
Junior is down getting treatment at the moment after a clash in the area with Jamie McGlynn.
CHANCE: Patterson danced his way from the wing inside and hit a well-placed effort that McNulty had to make sure of the save.
POST: Roland Idowu with another low effort that beat McNulty at his near post but not the post as the frame denies Waterford a fifth.
GOAL! A clever free-kick routine between Griffin and Patterson and the striker unleashes an excellent right-footed effort that beats McNulty at his near post.
Gareth Craven hits a curling free kick that just goes over Martin's bar. The home side has had rare attacks at the moment as Waterford control proceedings.
SAVE: Dylan McNulty pulls off an excellent save to stop Quitirna Junior from a set piece, he was at full length to stop it and in the ensuing battle of the ball in the Malahide area the ball eventually goes out for a corner.
Mark Brennan gets a caution for a hard tackle on Quitirna. The resulting free-kick breaks down as Malahide concedes another free kick on the edge of the area.

GOAL: And it's 3-0 to Waterford - Patterson puts Colm Deasy under pressure and hits a short pass to McNulty but Aouachira intercepted the ball and slammed it past the keeper who was out of position.
GOAL: What a hit! Roland Idowu just on the edge of the area turns and hits a fantastic strike which flies into the back of the net. Two goals in 90 seconds.
GOAL: And Waterford hit the lead! A ball over the top falls to the feet of Shane Griffin and he cleverly lobs it over the McNulty with a deft touch. 1-0 Waterford.
CHANCE: Patterson is fed by Junior and he is one on one with the keeper but someone he hits his effort wide, a big let-off and a danger sign from the Premier Division outfit.
