Bohemians see off non-league Lucan United in Dalymount

Bohemians have booked their place in the next round of the FAI Cup, after a strong performance in Dalymount Park this evening.

Playing as the visitors at their sacred home never seemed to slow them down, two goals within three minutes after the half-hour mark did enough to put them in the hat for the next draw.

Their Dublin neighbours did well in the tie to give them a game of it, the goals certainly took the sting out of the tie, finishing the game with ten players also saw them chasing the tie late on.

Lucan started well with early danger signs for Bohemians as Dave Mooney set up Joshua Ukek, his effort hit the post, and the rebound fell to Gary Seary but the effort came to nothing. Dylan Connolly had to be on his toes minutes later to keep out Jonathan Afolabi, looked like he had a pass on to set up a chance but the defender did well to clear.

Bohs were getting their chances, James Clarke tried a fancy flick to guide home a header by Tyreke Wilson but it went just wide of the target, then a crazy moment where Liam Burt had a glorious chance Kris Twardek sent a cross in, the keeper made a meal of it and Burt had his shot cannons off his own man Wilson on the line, great defending just in the wrong goal by the defender.

Just after the half-hour mark the “visitors” were ahead, Afolabi split the defence with a sublime pass through, Burt raced in before side-footing his shot past Imrich Toth. The floodlights opened as by the 35th minute they were 2-0 ahead, Wilson delivered a terrific cross from the left side of the area toward the back post, Afolabi jumped highest to head home.

It could have been 3-0 deep into injury time, Ciaran Kelly struck a long-range effort, the deflection on the way looked to have done enough to see it go wide as Toth was rooted in the goal, Bohs going in the happier of the teams at the interval.

Afolabi continued to torment Lucan into the second half, he forced Toth into a great save with an effort, before getting free in the area but he blazed his effort over the bar. Rory Feeley felt he made it three after the hour mark, a sweetly struck volley at the back post into the roof of the net, but the referee blew for a free.

Toth may have been at fault for a potential chance earlier in the tie, but his heroics between the posts midway through the half kept the score at 2-0, making a sensational double save as both efforts looked to be a third but lightning sharp reactions kept them in the tie.

Anthony McKay’s straight red for a challenge on Jamie Mullins saw Lucan play with ten men for the final 15 minutes, Bohemians looked too snatch a third Feely came close again but his effort went over, Wilson played another great ball in for substitute Ethon Varian his header was deflected away from goal, Toth doing enough to have some scouts looking at him with a sensational showing.
