Waves sail past Treaty and into Cup Quarters
DLR Waves advanced to the quarter-finals courtesy of a 5-0 crushing of Treaty United at the UCD Bowl.
The script was written immediately as Kate Mooney scored after just 32 seconds. Avril Brierley and an Own Goal made it 3-0 at the break. A scrappier second half saw Kate Malone and Mooney add further goals against a youthful, hard-working Treaty side.
Treaty came into this hoping for an escape from what has been a steep learning curve of a season in the WNL, the latest chapter seeing them getting them get hammered 10-0 by leaders Shelbourne.
However, it was DLR who started the sprightlier. Avril Brierley, who netted a brace when these sides met in the league, produced a neat layoff for Kate Mooney to glide onto and effortlessly curl a sumptuous left-footed shot into the top corner.
Twenty-two minutes in and the pair combined again. This time, Mooney turned provider controlling Jess Glesson’s long ball expertly before setting up the onrushing Brierley to stroke home with finesse.
An Own Goal (yet to be confirmed by whom) from a Treaty United defensive header made it 3-0 and effectively, game over, by halftime.
Despite a couple of substitutions at the interval, DLR refused to take their foot off the pedal. Kate Malone prodded in from the left side of the area after an energetic thrust forward from half-time arrival, Rachel Doyle.
A fifth goal swiftly followed. Mia Dodd’s pass, one of many great plays by her throughout, was controlled by Mooney who produced a delightful lob over Treaty goalkeeper, Michaela Mitchell.
The hosts continued to exert pressure with Mooney fluffing a chance of a hattrick and Sarah McKevitt blasting the ball off the crossbar from range.
So, it is DLR Waves who progress after a performance that was stacked with swagger and prowess. Mooney and Brierley will give any quarter-final defences a thorough examination.
Treaty meanwhile, with manager Niall Connolly, particularly vocal from the touchline, can take heart from a display that was certainly gutsy albeit not the result they desired.
