Match Report

UCD survive relegation condemning Waterford to the First Division

UCD will remain in the top flight as a Thomas Lonergan goal in the first half was enough to separate the sides in a game plan almost executed to perfection by the students.

Andy Meyler's men were composed of the consistent wave of attacks from Waterford. The Blues had plenty of sights on goal but felt completely frustrated as they plan yet another season in the first division. There could have been so many different outcomes on another night, but these games were always going to be decided by tiny moments of brilliance.

There could have been so many different outcomes on another night, but these games were always going to be decided by tiny moments of brilliance. Waterford was handed the ultimate opportunity to bring the game level with a 92nd-minute penalty just seconds after Killian Cantwell was sent off. Quitirina Junior Armando skied the effort and with that the dreams of the Premier Division.

Waterford showcased in the opening exchanges what has made them the most talked about side in the first division as a clever pass from Shane Griffin set Phoneix Patterson away but the striker's effort went high over the bar. It looked as if a stroke of fortune could have given the blues the lead as Junior had a sight on goal from a free kick that took a deflection, that Kian Moore in the UCD goal saw it late but he responded with a diving effort.

Alex Nolan and Sean Brennan both had sights on goal but neither failed to test Paul Martin it was mid-way through the first half when the script for Waterford fell apart. After Alex Nolan took a free-kick from the far right, Thomas Lonergan headed it past Martin at the back post to give UCD the lead. As Moore blocked an initial Blues shot, Evan Osam was forced to head the second ball backwards and out of clear and present danger to ensure the second ball didn't go in.

UCD were close to getting a second as Dara Keane got two bites of the cherry with his second effort just curling past Martin. Waterford continued to press high and a deep cross was sent into the UCD area with Wassim heading it down it just needed a teammate to toe-poke the ball home but UCD once again cleared the line. Thomas Lonergan almost added a second as he got the ball in the area, but his effort had to be parried by Martin and the Waterford keeper had to gather on the second attempt.

It looked as if Waterford had broken the deadlock only for a fine save by Kian Moore. Waterford front man Phoneix Patterson teed his shot up perfectly and Moore was on hand to push the goal-bound shot away. Killian Cantwell took his effort with a well-placed volley and it was just inches wide of the post. More blue frustration.

In the space of 90 seconds, the game could have turned on its head, it looked as if UCD had another slice of luck as Cantwell was given a second yellow but seconds later his side was awarded a penalty. Quitirina Junior Armando lined himself up to take his side back into the game to draw level but his effort flew over the bar.

At this level it's all about taking what is presented to you, UCD did that and Waterford wasted theirs.

SAVE: Wassim broke into the area but forces an excellent save from Kian Moore.

  • 70'

It seems the fact UCD have spent this season playing against full-time outfits is coming to their benefit in this contest, they are simply holding firm and able to see phases of attack out.

  • 66'

Another UCD defensive display as Waterford continue to press in numbers but the student's back line is holding firm.

  • 60'

SAVE: What a save from Patterson by Kian Moore, the Waterford front man teed his shot up perfectly and Moore was on hand to push the goalbound shot away. There were calls for a penalty in the follow-up but the protests fell on deaf ears.

  • 53'

Sean Brennan gets booked for a lunge on Junior, a few inches closer and there would have been calls for a penalty.

  • 45'

HALF TIME: It looked to be going all the one way under a Thomas Lonergan-headed goal gave UCD the goal and more importantly the impetus to have a go at this pacy and attack-minded Waterford. It's all to play for but as things stand UCD in an hour's time could be retaining their Premier Division status.

  • 45'

After two added minutes here at Richmond Park, Waterford looks annoyed and frustrated at the moment.

  • 37'

A call for a handball but it was never a penalty for Waterford, there is a break in play here as UCD has possession.

  • 33'

The more this game goes on the more you think that Waterford needs a goal before halftime to settle things, UCD is using their experience of defending against big composed sides all season is seemingly paying off with Waterford being reduced to long-range efforts.

  • 27'

CLOSE: Phoneix Patterson does what Patterson does best, a long-range effort that just curls over the bar.

  • 1'

KICK-OFF: We are underway! Waterford looks more positive as they look to get an eye on the goal early in front of a large expectant crowd.

  • There are still people packing into this ground - it's just a sea of blue at the moment with less than fifty UCD fans at one end of the ground.

  • UCD have made seven changes from the side that lost 2-0 to Shamrock Rovers last Sunday, the students rested players ahead of this contest as Andy Meyler knew what was ahead of him this week.

  • No changes from last week for Waterford as they go with the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' approach.

  • The atmosphere, the build-up, the tension! Ladies and Gentlemen welcome to the League of Ireland Promotion/Relegation playoff! Ciaran Callan is here to give you coverage for a literally full stand in Inchicore that is a sea of blue.
