Match Report
Republic of Ireland deliver win over Scotland
It was the case of Ireland the brave as Stephen Kenny’s men picked up their first win in the Nations League against Scotland.
The Republic of Ireland took the game to the Scots straight from the start and thoroughly deserved this victory.
The deadlock was broken in the 20th minute. James McClean’s ball into Michael Obafemi was deflected out for a corner. McClean’s corner met Shane Duffy at the back post he headed across goal and it was turned in by Alan Browne.
Things got better for Ireland eight minutes later when Troy Parrott doubled their advantage; Obafemi with a neat ball over the top that was headed past Craig Gordon by Parrott.
Five minutes into the second half and Ireland got a third; Obafemi with a stunning strike from about 25 yards out, Gordon had no chance.
The Irish defence stood firm and Scotland rarely troubled Ireland keeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
The Aviva was rocking and the supporters were in full voice right from the start. The Republic started with vigour and with three minutes gone on the clock Browne’s cross cum shot had to be pushed away by Gordon.
On 10 minutes Obafemi backheeled to Parrott, he laid the ball off to McClean but his shot had too much power on it and it sailed over the bar.
Scotland pumped a few balls into the Irish box but the defence did well. In the 13th minute a misplaced past nearly cost Ireland; the ball fell to John McGinn but Kelleher was alert and got down to save.
In the 19th minute McClean’s ball into Obafemi was deflected out for a corner. From the resulting corner Ireland took the lead. Scotland tried to get back into the game and McGinn should’ve done better in the 27th minute with Kelleher rooted to the spot as the ball sailed just wide.
Ireland doubled their advantage one minute later through Parrott. The stadium erupted with supporters then singing “There’s only one Stephen Kenny”.
Buoyed by those goals Jason Knight burst through in the 36th minute and his effort got a deflection out for a corner. From McClean’s corner Gordon pulled off an excellent save to deny Duffy.
Five minutes after the break Ireland grabbed a third goal through Obafemi and it was no more than he deserved. In the 61st minute substitute Scott Hogan saw his header cleared off the Grant Hanley as Ireland went in search of more goals. They couldn’t add to their tally but it mattered little. Onto Lodz now where they face Ukraine on Tuesday.
