Match Report

Five-star Wexford remain top with home win against Sligo

Kylie Murphy scored a hat-trick and Ciara Rossiter a brace of goals as leaders Wexford Youths overcame a spirited Sligo Rovers side at Ferrycarrig Park.

Murphy opened the scoring in the 31st minute, got her second after 59 minutes and completed her hat-trick in the 78th minute. Emma Doherty was on target twice for Rovers who battled for periods but couldn’t contain the potency of Murphy and Rossiter.

In the opening half-hour, Rovers’ Amy Mahon was by far the busier of the two keepers. She produced a good save from Rossiter in the fifth minute. Minutes later Jess Lawler’s header was way off target as Youths pressed for an opener.

In the 10th minute, Lawler’s effort just went over the bar. Nicola Sinnott had a header in the 24th minute but it was well held by Mahon.

The deadlock was broken in the 31st minute when Rossiter’s cross was headed home by Murphy. Maeve Williams brought off a superb save to deny Paula McGrory an equaliser in the 35th minute. In the 41st minute, Youths doubled their advantage when Rossiter got to the end of a Murphy cross to head past Mahon

Two minutes before the break Rovers pulled a goal back when Doherty hit a stunning strike.

Murphy grabbed her second of the game and her side’s third in the 59th minute with a powerful header. But just like before Rovers replied with a goal in the 61st minute; Emma Hansberry’s corner was finished to the net by Doherty.

Aoibheann Clancy had an effort that very nearly deceived Mahon in the 65th minute as Youths went in search of more goals.

In the space of two minutes, the home side secured the three points. In the 78th minute, Rossiter and Murphy combined again for Murphy to grab her hat-trick with another header. Two minutes later Rossiter got her second of the game; Amy Watkins’ effort was saved by Mahon but the ball fell to Rossiter and she fired to the net.

McGrory came close to getting a third goal for Sligo in the 83rd minute while Youths had half chances near the end.
