Match Report

Late Becky Cassin Strike Helps Cork to victory over Galway

An 89th minute goal from Becky Cassin helped Cork City to a 1-0 win over Galway WFC at Turners Cross this evening.

The off-field issues didn’t seem to affect the visitors in the opening stages as Alan Murphy’s side started the brighter. Lynsey McKee went close in the 7th minute but fired her shot over the bar from five yards out.

Galway kept coming and Elle O’Flaherty should have scored when she broke through into the City box but struck her shot straight at Abbie McCarthy.

McCarthy was required once again on the half hour mark when she saved an O’Flaherty penalty after City defender Ciara McNamara was deemed to have handled the ball inside the box.

Despite a slow start, City improved in the latter third of the half with Laura Shine having the best of the chances, but she hit her shot straight at Abbiegayle Ronayne from close range.

The Galway keeper was called into action once again in the 38th minute when she denied Aoibhinn Donnelly at the near post which meant the sides went in scoreless at the break.

City picked up where they left off after break with Evan Mangan testing Ronayne on a couple of occasions while she was just about equal to Kelly Leahy’s audacious lob in the 65th minute.

The hosts continued to dominate barring a couple of short spells as Galway struggled to create a clear-cut chance.

Galway’s first real chances of the second half came in the final ten minutes through Therese Kinnevy and McKee when McCarthy was caught off her line but was unable to get the required power to find the net.

Both sides continued to push for the elusive breakthrough, and it was Cork midfielder Becky Cassin who got it in the 89th minute when she picked up a great position in the box before rolling the ball past Ronayne.

That goal sealed a deserved 1-0 victory for City’s first win over the westerners this season.

  • Full time and City seal a deserved 1-0 win thanks to a late Becky Cassin strike.

  • 89'

Becky Cassin puts City ahead with a minute remaining. She put herself in an excellent position at the near post and managed to roll the ball past the diving Ronayne.

  • 87'

Both teams making subs with Maya Rutland and Chloe Atkinson on for Cork and Galway respectively.

  • 82'

McKee with Galway's best chance of the second half after McCarthy is caught off her line. She's not able to get enough power on the shot however.

  • 75'

Good defending from Cork's Lauren Singleton to deny Shauna Brennan. The visitors have struggled to create a clear cut chance in the second half.

  • 70'

Twenty minutes to go and you get the feeling that one goal here will be the difference in what has been a very tight second half.

  • 65'

Kelly Leahy with an audacious chip which nearly catches out Ronayne at her far post but is just about equal to it.

  • 56'

Great save from Ronayne to deny Mangan there. A well hit strike which the Galway keeper managed to tip around the post.

  • 48'

First chance of the second half falls to City's Eva Mangan but her free-kick is safely dealt with by Ronayne.

  • 46'

Back underway. No changes to either side at the beginning of the second half.

  • Teams back out for the second half.

  • Half time with sides deadlocked at 0-0. Galway started better but City came into the game as the half went on. All to play for in the second half.

  • 45'

One minute added on for the first half.

  • 38'

Good save again from Ronayne to deny Aoibhinn Donnelly at her near post.

  • 32'

What a chance for City. Laura Shine gets in behind the defence with only the keeper to beat but Ronayne denies her although the ball was hit straight at her.

  • 29'

Penalty for Galway as Ciara McNamara was deemed to have handled the ball. A harsh enough decision. McCarthy makes a great save from O'Flaherty to keep it scoreless.

  • 25'

Good defending from Lauren Walsh to deny Galway while McCarthy makes an equally important intervention from the resulting corner.

  • 19'

Pretty physical opening 20 minutes or so to this game. Galway edging it in terms of possession and chances so far.

  • 14'

Good run from Galway's Elle O'Flaherty into the box but really should have done better with her shot which rolls into the hands of Abbie McCarthy.

  • 7'

City's first attack ends with a corner which is safely cleared.

  • 5'

First chance of the game falls to Galway's Lynsey McKee who receives the ball five yards out from goal but blazes a half volley over the bar.

  • 1'

    Underway.

  • Teams out onto the pitch.
