Match Report

Shelbourne Edge Past Battling Galway

Shelbourne look to keep their title charge on track as they travel west to face Galway tonight.

Shelbourne returned to winning ways after overcoming a gallant Galway effort to win 2-1 at Eamonn Deacey Park.

Despite their underdog status, Galway started brightly and were nearly ahead in the opening minutes through Chloe Singleton whose close-range effort demand a great save from Amanda Budden.
Despite a slow start Shels’ grew into the game through Abbie Larkin in particular who proved to be a thorn in the side of the westerners.

Gemma Quinn also put in an effective opening quarter and nearly put the visitors ahead when she charged down Abbigayle Ronayne’s clearance. Luckily for Galway however, the ball rolled just left and wide.

Singleton continued to be effective for Galway and forced another save from Budden in the 27th minute when her long ranged effort was tipped over the bar.

Galway’s fortune would turn soon after however with Nicole McNamara forced off through injury. They then conceded a penalty in the 36th minute when Jamie Erickson was deemed to have fouled Quinn in the box although the replays showed the incident to be more of an accidental collision.

Jesse Stapleton converted the resulting spot kick to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. That lead was nearly doubled three minutes later when Ronayne was forced into making an excellent save from a Seana Fox header.

The beginning of the second half was more promising for the hosts and laid siege to the Shelbourne goal in 10-minute period although the visitors managed to hold firm thanks to the commanding presence of Budden.

What Galway were unable to do, Shelbourne did in the 66th minute through Noelle Murray who did really well to take the ball down and fire a long range effort into the roof of the net to make it 2-0.

Galway did get one back however in the 73rd minute through Bryce Reynolds who managed to flick on a header into the bottom corner to make it 2-1.

That’s as good as it got for the hosts however as Shelbourne held on to stay two points clear at the top of the table.
