Shels get back to winning ways at home to Treaty
Three goals in seven first-half minutes proved decisive as WNL leaders Shelbourne cruised to a 4-0 win over strugglers Treaty United at Tolka Park this afternoon.
Ahead of their Champions League qualification clash away in Slovenia against Pomurje on Thursday evening, this was a well-deserved victory and clean sheet for Noel King's side.
It was a dominant start for Shels, with Alex Kavanagh breaking the deadlock from distance from a well-taken free-kick after five minutes. Michaela Mitchell, who made multiple saves for Treaty to keep the score down, was rooted to the spot.
New signing Emma Starr doubled their lead shortly afterwards, finishing adroitly after a defense-splitting pass by Noelle Murray.
Jemma Quinn couldn't believe her luck and punished another sloppy mistake on 12 minutes, chipping into an empty net from distance after a weak free-kick forward was immediately repelled and they broke in numbers on the counter-attack.
Quinn, Murray and Keeva Keenan were among those with opportunities to add to the lead before half-time, though sloppy fouls and niggling injuries slowed the tempo as Shels' intensity dropped considerably.
Murray missed another gilt-edged chance after good work from Starr, in her last action of the afternoon as King made a triple change before the hour mark.
Abbie Larkin was among those introduced and she caused havoc for the Treaty backline, creating chances for Jessica Gargan and fellow sub Taylor White.
Gargan had a clear penalty appeal waved away by the referee, while Treaty's attempts to keep it goalless in the second half were all because of their hosts' poor finishing. Eventually, they added another.
A long throw-in by Keeva Keenan looped over Jess Mendez and substitute Megan Smyth-Lynch was on hand to punish another piece of poor defending from close range.
Izzy Glennon, another sub, twice came close to adding further gloss on a commanding Shelbourne showing. Mitchell denied her from point-blank range at the near post, minutes after her low ball flashed narrowly wide of the far post.
Four goals, three points, a clean sheet and no injuries for the league leaders - morale-boosting preparation ahead of a tricky trip 1400 miles to Slovenia next week.

FT: Shelbourne 4-0 Treaty United. A dominant display, four goals and a clean sheet for the league leaders - ideal preparation ahead of a tricky trip to Slovenia on Thursday in the Champions League.
Chance! Starr with a great through ball finds an overlapping Glennon. Mitchell denies her from point-blank range at the near post, then she somehow can't hammer home the rebound moments afterwards!
Four minutes of stoppage-time to be played now.
Close! Izzy Glennon, on as a sub 15 minutes ago, advances forward intently and hits an inviting cross with Smyth-Lynch lurking - but crucially opted not to gamble as the ball trickles past the far post.
Smyth-Lynch appears to have been booked for dissent on the far side, kicking the ball forward moments after the referee blew his whistle signalling for an offside as Shels had players charging into the box.
A long throw-in by Keeva Keenan loops over Jess Mendez and Megan Smyth-Lynch is on hand to punish another piece of poor defending! 4-0 to Shelbourne, a relieved celebration by the substitute.
GOAL! SHELS MAKE IT FOUR!
Commentator saying for Treaty to keep it goalless in this second-half will be a 'massive achievement', rather speaks volumes... it'd be more to do with the hosts' poor finishing than anything else though.
Shels almost trying to pass the ball into the net! Larkin does well, Kelly tees up Starr who feeds White... she fires over the bar after a well-worked passing sequence, now time for another water break.
Break in play as Kavanagh is down receiving medical attention in her own half.
Graham as well as goalscorers Quinn and Murray all off -- Kelly, Lynch and Larkin replacing them for the hosts.
That's going to be her last action of the afternoon, as a triple change is coming now.
Chance! Murray had to do better there, played in by Starr, but had too much time to think before striking goalwards and somehow blazes over the bar with only the 'keeper to beat.
Just some housekeeping from late in the first-half... confirmation that Shannon Parbat, down with that head injury, was replaced by Niamh O'Byrne.
Second-half underway and one change for the hosts: Taylor White replacing Heather O'Reilly at half-time.
HT: Shelbourne 3-0 Treaty United. That's the final action of a first-half which started quickly, fizzled out in the middle and got going again right at the end. League leaders deservedly ahead, could easily be six or seven right now!
Mitchell called into action, denying a cheeky Quinn backheel after Starr's miskick fell kindly for her teammate.
Into stoppage-time now, Treaty will be desperate not to concede again before the interval.
A well-timed tackle by Tobin stops another Shelbourne attack in its tracks, this time inside the area...
Lots of ticky-tacky fouls now slowing the tempo further, referee gives Murray a stern talking-to after she reacts angrily having given away a foul near the centre-circle.
Close! Shels' Keeva Keenan curls one goalwards, her effort is narrowly wide. Another stoppage in play, looks like a head injury for a Treaty defender..
Gargan produces a last-ditch intervention to deny an onrushing Griffin as she bore down on goal after Mendez's excellent through ball pass - a rare half-chance for Treaty fizzles out.
Chance! A half-hearted defensive clearance sees the ball spin backwards into Murray's path, unmarked in the box. She chips the keeper but can't keep her attempt down, watching it float onto the side netting above the crossbar.
Shels' final ball is flagging now, Murray the latest to see her pass break down inside the area.
Over the bar! Quinn hits over the crossbar from close-range - and really should've hit the target - after good work from Gargan to weave past her marker and advance into the box. Still 3-0.
After a brief stoppage following an off-the-ball injury to a Treaty defender, we're back underway and... then now a water break is in progress. For what it's worth, Shels have been in the ascendancy so far but Treaty - from their defensive shape and inability to retain possession - making it awfully easy for them.
Mitchell makes an acrobatic diving stop to deny Shauna Fox's header from making it four, after a good lofted ball into the box by Jess Gargan.
This is tough to watch. Shels can't believe their luck so far, another costly mistake in possession - this time from Mitchell's weak free-kick, sees the hosts counter at speed and breakaway, with the Treaty 'keeper in no man's land. Quinn still had a bit to do, but chips into an empty net from distance to make it 3-0 in 12 minutes...
QUINN ADDS ANOTHER! SHELBOURNE STEAMROLLING AHEAD HERE!
Her first goal for the league leaders after departing Galway last month, a well-taken finish from close-range after a defence-splitting pass by Noelle Murray.
STARR MAKES IT TWO!
Heather O'Reilly does well to twist past two players and win a free-kick in a dangerous position outside the box, from which Alex Kavanagh fires beyond Michaela Mitchell - who was rooted to the spot! 1-0 to the hosts.
GOAL FOR SHELBOURNE! A well-taken free-kick!
Kick-off! 24 degrees celsius on a beautiful day in Drumcondra, the referee blows his whistle and we're underway.
Team news is in! Just four substitutes for the visitors, an interesting line-up by Noel King with regular Jessie Stapleton not involved today - unclear whether that's through an injury or otherwise.
