Match Report

Peamount United come from behind to beat Galway WFC

Peamount came from behind to defeat Galway at PRL Park. Second-half goals from Erin McLaughlin and Dora Gorman gave James O’Callaghan’s side the win.

A stunning volley from Lynsey McKey gave Galway the lead in the 23rd minute. Peas pressed for an equaliser. They were back on level terms in the 58th minute when Erin McLaughlin’s fine strike ended up in the back of the net. They took the lead in the 74th minute when Gorman hit an excellent strike past the helpless Abbiegayle Ronayne in the Galway goal.

The home side started well with Aine O’Gorman and Dearbhaile Beirne causing Galway problems. In the eighth minute Beirne put in a cross that met Sadhbh Doyle but her effort just went wide.

Doyle put in a cross minutes later but Ronayne got a touch to it and it went out for a corner. O’Gorman set Beirne up in the 16th minute but the Leitrim girl’s effort came off the crossbar.

A good tackle from Becky Walsh in the 19th minute deflected Erin McLaughlin’s shot out for a corner. The ball eventually fell to McLaughlin but her effort just went over.

Galway did well to soak up the pressure, while also trying to create opportunities of their own. They broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute through McKey. Alan Murphy’s side upped their game after the game and Niamh Reid-Burke did well to deny Julie-Ann Russell in the 30th minute.

Peamount tried to get back on level terms but Galway defended well with Ronayne in particular thwarting them on a number of occasions. She denied O’Gorman in the 38th minute and minutes later produced an excellent save to stop O’Gorman’s well struck free from going in.

The home side bossed the early exchanges of the second half as they tried to get back on level terms. O’Gorman’s shot went over the bar in the 54th minute but four minutes later they equalised through McLaughlin.

In the 74th minute Peas took the lead through Gorman. Both sides pressed for another goal but Peamount held on for the win in an entertaining game of football.
