Match Report
A dramatic late brace from Ellen Molloy helped Wexford Youths overcome Bohemians 3-1 and move up to second spot in the WNL table. Della Doherty and Lisa Murphy exchanged goals before Molloy demonstrated her prowess to seal three points for the Youths. Following Athlone’s credible draw at leaders Shelbourne, the opportunity to leapfrog them back into second was there for Wexford Youths. However, it was the visitors who started the better of the sides, Abbie Brophy and Erica Burke causing problems for the home defence. Maeve Williams repelled Rachel Doyle’s driven free-kick before Youths started to assert themselves, Kylie Murphy lashing a volley just over. The influential Doyle drew another save from Williams right on half time whilst after the interval, Rebecca Cooke’s wonderfully improvised turn and snapshot had Williams again riding to Wexford’s rescue. At last, the deadlock was broken after seventy minutes when Aoibheann Clancy delivered a free kick into the mixer, Rachel Kelly couldn’t hold onto the ball and Della Doherty gleefully tapped in. In increasingly wet and windy conditions, something that players in Ireland will be well used to, Bohs responded instantly. Doyle’s delivery was again dangerous, and Lisa Murphy powered a header home. A draw would have been a fair outcome given Boh’s attacking threat earlier but a quick-fire double from Ellen Molloy secured Wexford the win. First, a hashed clearance defensively fell only as far as Molloy who was allowed time to take a touch and wallop the ball crisply into the bottom corner for 2-1. Moments later, she scored again, this time a slick, composed finish from the right side of the penalty area. So, Wexford go second for now and if anything, perfectly demonstrated the trait of winning whilst not playing at their best. Bohs can only rue their profligacy but take pride in a fine performance. Bohs have a tough test ahead as they play Shelbourne next whilst Wexford will hope to build on this as they travel to Treaty United next weekend.Molloy magic captures the points for Wexford late against Bohemians
