Match Report
Galway went level on points with fourth placed Peamount United courtesy of a 5-1 thrashing of Cork City and Shelbourne’s 4-0 dismantling of the Peas. Three early goals put them in control before a Lynsey McKey brace in the second half sealed a stylish, convincing win. The Westerners made a dream start as they bagged three goals within the opening ten minutes. Lynsey McKey first delivery deflected into the net off the unfortunate Ciara McNamara. By the eighth minute, it was 3-0. First, Bryce Reynolds soared high to plant a header past Maria O’Sullivan. Then, this time from Shauna Brennan’s delivery, Jamie Erickson headed home. Despite this disastrous start, Cork were still a creative threat particularly via Orla Deasy on the left. One pinpoint cross was ballooned over by Lauren Singlepoint in their best early chance. Keen to get back in the game, Cork manager Danny Murphy made a triple substitution at half time which quickly paid dividends. Aoife O’Brien’s interception led to Nadine Seward’s cross, and Lauren Shine converted calmly at the back post. However, McKey swiftly snuffed out any vague Cork hopes of a comeback as she bagged a brace within minutes. Chloe Singleton’s dropping pass was volleyed in with aplomb before Julie-Ann Russell, who worked tirelessly, unselfishly squared it for McKey to roll the ball past O’Sullivan. The evergreen McKey making history as her strikes today mean she has scored in every WNL campaign in the league’s existence. Singleton then was red carded for a reckless push out at a Cork player after she lost possession. A shame for the midfielder who until then, had been having a fine game. But that was to be the only blemish on a tremendous evening’s work for Galway. They are now ten WNL games unbeaten and hitting form at the right time. Peamount’s emphatic defeat was the cheery on the cake for the Eammon Deacy Park faithful. Cork meanwhile must continue in their hunt for a winning formula.WNL Report: Galway WFC v Cork City
