WNL: Wexford slip up at home to Galway
Wexford lose ground on league leaders Shelbourne as they’re held to a 1-1 draw at home in Ferrycarrig Park by a resilient Galway WFC.
Lobato headed home in the 88th minute and thought she had given the away side the points but Sinnott scored in stoppage time to share the spoils.
Neither side managed to create much in a match that didn’t really spark into life, with both teams returning from the mid-season break and without competitive action in almost a month.
Both sides looked to get their second half of the campaign off to a good start today with Wexford starting the pre kick-off in 2nd place and Galway in 5th just 6 points behind. With leading Shelbourne winning against Treaty, this game became crucial for potential title challenges as the fixtures will quickly run thin should they be dropping points now.
Wexford Youths started the better of the sides early on and had the first effort on goal of the game. Kylie Murphy shot from range but Ronayne was able to tip the ball onto the bar and keep the game level.
Coming up to the quarter mark of the game the Youths had their second attempt at goal through Rossiter but her effort from range sailed over the bar. Wexford dominated the ball at this point and smothered every threat Galway threw at them to this point.
It took until the half-hour mark in the game for Galway to come into it. Their early efforts to break Wexford down over the top were dealt with easily however they started to gain some success looking for O’Flaherty running the channels.
It was after some great work from O’Flaherty winning a corner that led to Galway having their first chance through a scramble in the box that Lobato could not poke home for the away side.
Youths forced Ronayne into another save shortly after through Ellen Molloy shooting from range from a free-kick that was destined for the top corner but Ronayne was able to parry away.
That was it for the opening half which in truth lacked any major goal-scoring opportunities with the sides deadlocked at the break. Wexford Youths 0-0 Galway WFC.
Galway got the first major chance of the game early in the second half. Some fantastic footwork from Elle Rose O'Flaherty to work her way into the box and find space forced a good save from Williams, her first test in the Wexford net.
On the hour mark, Watkins crossed in from the right and picked out Rossiter who shot over from close range in a rare adventure beyond the Galway back line for the hosts.
A couple of injuries broke up the play a little bit as the game lost any flow coming up to 15 mins to play. Both sides had efforts from range sail over the bar.
Galway took the lead on the 88th minute after a sequence of free kicks that were not dealt with by the Youth's defence. Lucia Lobato popped up to head home from a looping cross and she thought that would be the three points wrapped up and going back west.
Wexford answered back deep into stoppage time as they threw the kitchen sink at Galway. A corner ended up at the feet of Sinnott who smashed home low and hard to share the points in the end but Wexford will be disappointed to lose ground on the league leaders.
After both defenders' late efforts, it ended in a draw in Ferrycarrig Park. Wexford 1-1 Galway WFC.
