Match Report

Galway and Athlone share the spoils

Galway WFC and Athlone Town called it honours even as they played out a 0-0 draw in Fahy’s Field today.

In a game between two WNL teams on the ascendancy, both teams ended up cancelling each other out, with neither creating enough chances to be deserving of the win.

Neither side had many clear cut chances in this one. The closest either side would come to scoring happened to be the first chance of the game, which came in the 31st minute.

Chloe Singleton played a nice one-two on the right hand side and lobbed a nice cross in. This was met by Jenna Slattery, whose header could only hit the bar and head over.

Six minutes later, Athlone came the closest they would to scoring. Jessica Hennessy played one of her trademark long passes over the top of the opposing defence for Kellie Brennan to give chase.

Brennan held up the play, waiting for the reinforcements to arrive. Her ball across the area fell to the feet of Sophie Liston, who was denied by a last ditch tackle.

The Athlone bench appealed strongly for a penalty, but the referee waved away any such claims.

The second half followed the same pattern as the first, with only two chances really worth talking about.

The first of these came in the 66th minute, when Jenna Slattery and Julie-Ann Russell linked up well for a one-two.

This resulted in the former playing the latter in with a dinked through ball, but it never came down right for Slattery and she ended up blaring her effort well over the bar.

Galway nearly snatched it thanks to a defensive error in the 73rd minute. Niamh Coombes came to deal with a free kick from just inside the Athlone half, but missed the ball completely.

Luckily for her, Hennessy was alert to get back and clear the ball away before it could cross the line.

Alas, this ended 0-0. The game was likely a result of two well matched teams simply cancelling each other out.

This is now Galway’s third draw in five games, but their unbeaten streak remains intact. Athlone on the other hand have drawn for the first time since their second game of the season against Bohs.

Galway will remain in 5th whilst Athlone will be leapfrogged by Peamount. After the break, Galway are away to Wexford whilst Athlone will host Cork.

First chance for Athlone. Hennessy lofts one over the top for Kellie Brennan to give chase, who squares it to Sophie Liston. She's tackled and there are shouts for a penalty, but the ref is having none of it.

Curse of the commentator. Singleton works a one-two out right and dinks a cross in. Jenna Slattery meets it but her header hits the bar.
