Singleton wonder goal hands Cork win over Treaty United

A spectacular Lauren Singleton free kick in the second half was the difference as Cork City edged Treaty United 2-1 at Turners Cross.

The opening minutes reflected a typical derby contest with both sides knowing what was at stake.

Despite a cagey opening the game sparked into life in the 8th minute when Treaty were awarded a penalty to the bewilderment of the large crowd in attendance. Aislinn Meaney dispatched the resulting spot kick to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

City responded well and began to enjoy a long spell of possession in the second quarter. Christina Dring was ever present up front and nearly put through Lauren Singleton through for a certain goal. Treaty keeper Michaela Mitchell did well to deny her however in what was an impressive first half performance.

The last big chance of the half came through Treaty’s Cara Griffin who hit a spectacular lob over keeper Maria O’Sullivan. Much to City’s relief however the ball it the crossbar.

City started the better side in the second half and nearly drew level through Eva Mangan’s mazy run into the box. The resulting shot however went straight at Mitchell.

The Treaty keeper would finally be beaten in the 62nd minute when Danielle Burke stroked the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box to level the game at 1-1.

The goal gave City the impetus as they chased a winner with Treaty content to sit deep and hit on the break with the yellow cards also racking up for the visitors.

The hosts would get their second goal in the 79th minute through Lauren Singleton. A spectacular free-kick from the touchline went over the head of Mitchell and into the net, much to the delight of the home support.

That goal proved to be the winner as Danny Murphy picked up his first win as manager which moves them eight points clear of their Munster rivals.
