Galway dominant, but only manage home draw with Bohemians
A dominant performance wasn't enough to see Galway past Bohemians and the sides finished tied 1-1 at Eamonn Deacy Park this evening.
Sinead Taylor proved a handful for the Galway defence in the first-half and her 21st minute goal gave Bohs the lead.
Galway controlled play all game but had to wait until just before half-time to draw level through a Chloe Singleton header.
The home side just couldn't avail of several second-half chances to take the lead while Bohs appeared content to hold on to a draw.
Sinead Taylor nearly netted an early chance for Bohemians when she stabbed Lisa Murphy's delivery toward the home goal but her effort went narrowly wide.
Galway took control of the game after that, and dominated possession for the rest of the half, although they struggled to trouble Bohs' goalkeeper Rachael Kelly and her organised defence.
Jenna Slattery probably had the best early chance for the home side but couldn't hit the target from a narrow angle. Despite seeing little of the ball, it was the visitors that looked far more likely to score.
Another long ball from Lisa Murphy found Sinead Taylor up front and it took an excellent save from Galway's Abbiegayle Ronanye to stop her putting Bohs ahead before the 20 minute mark.
Bohs' accurate long balls to the pacey and powerful Taylor spelled danger for Galway though, and soon led to the visitors taking the lead.
On 21 minutes, Bronagh Kane curled an excellent pass from the left wing to the feet of Taylor, who, ahead of her markers, struck past Ronayne to send the Gypsies a goal ahead.
Galway pushed forward more after conceding and began to create chances in the final third as half-time approached.
Rachael Kelly made a couple of fast-twitch saves to keep the Gypsies from conceding but they were under increasing pressure.
With three minutes remaining in the half, a Shauna Brennan corner found the head of Chloe Singleton, who powered in an equaliser for Galway as Bohs' defence was finally beaten.
The Tribeswomen were even more in control of affairs in the second-half. The visitors were hemmed in and rarely got forward but Galway failed to punish them, managing mostly timid efforts toward goal.
As time pushed on, Lauryn Ganache got on to a Julie-Ann Russell corner but she blazed her effort over, while Emma Starr had her headed effort stopped from passing the line as Bohemians remained resolute in their defending.
A late Emma Starr chance hit the side-netting and the game ended in a stalemate to see Galway climb to fifth place in the WNL and extend their unbeaten run to five games. Bohemians drop to eighth as Sligo Rovers overtook them with a win today.
