Noonan and Douglas deliver for Shels
A brace each from Saoirse Noonan and Gloria Douglas helped Shelbourne cruise to a 5-0 win over Treaty United at Tolka Park to go top of the WNL.
Jessie Stapleton was the other scorer for The Reds as they completely outclassed The Shannonsiders in a one-sided affair.
The defending champions wasted no time at all in opening up the scoring.
After just three minutes Gloria Douglas headed home a great cross from Megan Smyth-Lynch.
Just two minutes later Jessie Stapleton found herself in front of an empty net to nod in Shels’s second.
The following 15 minutes presented few chances except for Douglas skewing a close range effort wide.
Soon after Saoirse Noonan would triple the host’s lead, volleying an Abbie Larkin cross past Trish Fennelly.
Noonan’s second came 10 minutes before the break with a great diving header from a Chloe Mustaki delivery to put Shelbourne up 4-0.
Noel King opted to make four changes at half-time one of which was Jemma Quinn who missed two chances early on in the second-half to extend The Reds’s lead.
Just after the hour mark Shelbourne’s persistence would pay off when Alex Kavanagh’s corner found Gloria Douglas at the far post who completed her brace with a powerful header to make it 5-0.
Despite being comfortably ahead, Shelbourne continued to search for more goals.
Trish Fennelly was kept busy for the remainder of the game, making two quick saves against Quinn and then Taylor White on the following chance.
Leah Doyle looked as though she had scored one of the goals of the season with a great dipping effort from distance but Fennelly managed to palm the ball out for a corner.
Quinn looked as though she had finally gotten her goal when she scooped the ball over Fennelly but she was ruled as offside.
This afternoon’s win along with Peamount dropping points against Bohemians means that Shelbourne are now two points clear of their Dublin rivals at the top of the table.
The two meet next Saturday at Tolka Park for one of the showpiece games of the season.
As for Treaty, the hunt for their first points of the season continues. They welcome Bohemians to Markets Field next Saturday.

The best defence (Shelbourne) takes on the league's worts attack (Treaty), in what will be an uphill battle for The Shannonsiders that find themselves at the bottom of the table on 0 points
