Match Report
Wexford overcome Sligo on the double
Goals from Becky Watkins and Ciara Rossiter were too much for Sligo Rovers as they lost 2-0 to Wexford Youths at Ferrycarrig Park.
Despite the score line, Steven Feeney’s side put in a valiant defensive performance and made a good account of themselves by frustrating the hosts for large parts of the game.
Youths started as expected with a flurry of chances early on. Kristen Sample palmed a Becky Watkins header over the bar and minutes later she made a great acrobatic save to deny Kylie Murphy.
The game quietened after the frantic start as Rovers settled into the game and frustrated their opponents.
Steve Feeney’s side were very compact at the back and did not allow the usual fluidity between the Wexford front three.
Eventually the individual brilliance of one of that front three shone through.
Becky Watkins chested the ball over her marker and drove into the Sligo box. Her left footed strike was too much for Kristen Sample who couldn’t get across her goal quick enough.
Wexford led 1-0 at the break and almost made it two just after the restart when Ellen Molloy’s close range shot was inches wide of the goal.
Sligo’s best chance of the game came when a long ball into the Wexford box fell to Gemma McGuinness who went down, but referee Chris Sheehan waved play on.
Again Sligo grew into the game and managed to keep Wexford relatively quiet.
Sample made two routine saves against Ellen Molloy and Kylie Murphy just after the hour mark.
However, Wexford’s patience would be rewarded 10 minutes from time when Sample made another great save to deny Kylie Murphy, but Ciara Rossiter was on hand to thump the ball into the goal.
The result means Wexford sit third in the table level on points with Shelbourne and three behind league leaders Peamount.
Youths welcome Shels to Ferrycarrig Park on Tuesday night in what will be a huge clash in the title race.
Sligo find themselves sixth in the table now and travel to Athlone next Saturday.
