Wexford attack on fire in Dalymount
Wexford Youths’ attacking cohort were on fire today in Dalymount, earning them a comprehensive 3-0 win over Bohemians in the third round of the Women’s National League.
A classic Ellen Molloy screamer opened proceedings, with a Ciara Rossiter strike directly from a corner and a poacher’s goal from captain Kylie Murphy making up the difference.
It’s Wexford’s second win so far this year and they also have a game in hand, while for Bohs tonight’s loss means they have amassed just a point from the opening fixtures.
Molloy proved once again tonight that even from 30 yards teams clearly can’t afford to give her space, the 17 year old smashing a bullet from distance to notch the first tally on the scoresheet with just six minutes elapsed.
The Gypsies excelled through set pieces from there on out, pushing most of their play through Abbie Brophy and ex Wexford player Kira Bates Crosbie but struggling to pull off the final ball.
They often had to break quickly on the counter attack too as for the vast majority of the first 45 minutes they had they had their entire team back in an effort to defend. It wasn’t to be however as in nearing the hour mark Rossiter’s corner kick found the inside of the net, marking the second such bizarre goal in as many weeks in the WNL given Stephanie Roche achieved the same feat when Peamount took on Galway last weekend.
The score-line remained at 2-0 at halftime, leaving it all to do for the hosts in the second half.
Wexford continued their forward-thinking prowess after the pause though, Rossiter turning provider when she set up skipper Murphy for a tap in at the back post.
Bohs came back into things a touch around the 70th minute mark as they had chances through Erica Burke, Chloe Darby and Sinead Taylor, although none were particularly hazardous for Maeve Williams to deal with.
Next up for Stephen Quinn’s outfit it’s Treaty United, while for the Gypsies it’s a trip to The Showgrounds in Sligo.

The last time the pair met was one to forget for Bohs, a 7-0 throbbing for Youths with a Kylie Murphy hattrick, an Ellen Molloy brace and an Aoibheann Clancy net all making the difference. While the score-line showcased their dominance in that one, cumulative results from the entirety of last season did too with Wexford emerging victorious on all four occasions.
They supplemented other transfers such as Katie Burdis from DLR Waves, all of whom are having an impact early on for their new team.
The Gypsies too can take plenty of positives into this third round and will have some familiar talent in their ranks with Sinead Taylor, Fiona Ryan and Kira Bates Crosbie all having moved from Wexford to the north Dublin club during the off season.
The Youths most recent playing encounter came against that very opposition too, concluding 2-1 to them at the final whistle. There it looked as if an upset was on the cards when Emily Corbett opened the scoring for The Town to take the lead, but the routine was restored in the second half when Ellen Molloy converted a freekick and Jess Lawlor sent home the winner.
The Stephen Quinn managed side had an unscheduled rest last round when their match against Shelbourne was called off due to a waterlogged pitch. Bohs on the other hand battled through tough conditions to pinch a draw against Athlone Town at home last weekend with Erica Burke’s earlier goal cancelled out by Roisin Molloy in the second half.
