Match Report

Rory leaves it late for Rovers return

Rory Gaffney produced a 94th minute winner to extend Shamrock Rover’s lead at the top of the Premier table back to five points, following a dramatic 3-2 win against rivals Shelbourne.

The champions who had to come from behind twice, showed title winning spirit to battle and leave with the three points.

The hosts dominated the opening stages of the game, but it was the visitors who broke the deadlock against the run of play after 14 minutes when Shane Farrell got on the end of a JJ Lunney header from midfield, to race in behind the Rovers defence, and slot the ball past Alan Mannus to make it 1-0.

Boosted by the goal, the visitors began to grow into the game and become more confident knocking it about. Winger Matty Smith pounced on a slack pass from the Rovers defence to drive into the penalty area before looking to take on Cleary before he fell to the ground looking for a penalty. Referee Robert Harvey wasn’t interested and waved play on.

However, it was the hosts who equalised just over ten minutes later, when a terrific Jack Byrne corner to the back post was well met by Daniel Cleary who nodded home.

Chances for either side dried up then until Neil Farrugia tested Brendan Clarke with an effort that the goalkeeper did well to push away. Shelbourne had players who went into the referee’s book. First, Lunney for a foul on Byrne before Kameron Ledwidge was booked for descent.

As the half drew to a close, the away side retook the lead when Farrell done brilliantly to guide a cross from Mark Coyle into the corner on the half-volley to send the away end into delirium.

The Shelbourne defence worked tirelessly throughout the second half to limit Rovers to half chances, but with eight minutes to go, a mistake by Clarke from an Aaron Greene header allowed Dan Cleary to step up and pounce home the ball to make it 2-2.

Just as the game seemed to be heading to a 2-2 stalemate and two dropped points by the home side, a corner right at the death was swung in by Jack Byrne to the back post to Rory Gaffney who connected with a volley to fire the ball back across the goal and in off the far post to make it 3-2 and send Tallaght wild.

Rovers now move onto European action on Thursday before a trip to Drogheda next Sunday, while Shelbourne travel to Waterford in the semi-final of the FAI Cup.
