Match Report

Derry breeze past Harps in Derby win

Strikes from Michael Duffy, Brandon Kavanagh & Jamie McGonigle steered Derry City to a comfortable 3-0 victory in the Northwest derby tonight.

This contest pitted geographic rivals at opposite ends of the table against each other. Derry pursuing league leaders Shamrock Rovers whilst Finn Harps were seeking some invaluable points to edge away from relegation rivals, UCD, at the bottom.

Cameron McJannet planted an early header wide for the hosts, but that miss was forgotten moments later when they opened the scoring.

Young winger Brandon Kavanagh, who enjoyed a fine game, rolled a delicious pass into the path of fellow wide man Michael Duffy who coolly caressed the ball across away keeper James McKeown for a merited, 1-0 lead.

Early in the second half, home striker, James Akintunde spurned a couple of gilt-edged chances but the Candystripes soon scored a nerve-soothing second on the hour mark.

McJannet raced down the left, Akintunde made a pest of himself as the cross evaded McKeown & Kavanagh kept calm to tuck in a fine finish at the back post & give his side breathing space.

Ruaidhri Higgins sent on his top scorer Jamie McGonigle who won a penalty off Harps defender Conor Tourish for hacking him down.

Regular taker, Will Patching, who had missed his last few, allowed a determined McGonigle to take but his spot-kick lacked accuracy & McKeown scrambled well to save.

However, Derry’s top scorer ended his drought stunningly in injury time. Joe Thomson’s unintended pass ironically proved the perfect setup as McGonigle thundered an unstoppable first-time volley into the net, to add gloss to the score.

With Rovers not playing until later, Derry have once again reduced the gap to two points & cannot be dismissed in this title race.

They face Sligo next meanwhile Harps, spared bottom place by UCD’s loss tonight, host Dundalk, needing points & needing them fast.

  • 82'

TABLE: Luckily for Harps, UCD are now 2-0 behind to Sligo Rovers- Horgan's side staying in the relegation playoff place as it stands. Derry will close to within two points of league leaders, Shamrock Rovers, if they hold on here

  • 79'

Scorer & assister, Kavanagh departs to a standing ovation with Joe Thomson coming on

  • 77'

It'd be very interesting if Harps were to pull one back now but that doesn't look likely as we enter the final twelve minutes

  • 74'

PENALTY SAVED: McGonigle steps up & rams it hard, but McKeown gets down to save it, poor penalty from McGonigle! Intriguing that Patching didn't take it after missing his last couple

  • 73'

PENALTY: Derry dominating the ball now as they look to score a third & seal the points... oh & McGonigle has been hacked down by Tourish & Derry City have a penalty!

  • 66'

  • 56'

ELSEWHERE: Good news for Finn Harps as UCD are currently trailing 1-0 to Sligo Rovers, so as it stands Harps are still ninth

  • 54'

Will Derry rue these missed chances?

  • 53'

SAVE: Akintunde again should score! Ronan Boyce's shot deflects into him & the striker's scuffed effort is repelled by McKeown from close range!

  • 49'

CHANCE: Duffy slides through Akintunde who painstakingly drags his shot wide, perhaps put off by Rob Slevin's attempted tackle

  • 46'

    SECOND HALF UNDERWAY

  • 45'

HALF TIME: A fairly matched first half concludes, it's 1-0 to Derry at the break

  • 44'

It comes to nought as Duffy's delivery is overhit & Finn Harps see it out well. Apart from the goal, the visitors have defended very well so far

  • 42'

Finn Harps' left back Regan Donelon scythes down Kavanagh, free kick Derry on the edge of the area...

  • 35'

Horgan is bellowing instructions out from his technical area, the away side are pressing well, Filip Mihaljevic, especially, is putting himself about

  • 30'

Carrillo upends Duffy & collects the first yellow card of the evening

  • 24'

SAVE: Away skipper, Barry McNamee pounces on a loose ball with a vengeance, drilling a fiery effort in & Brian Maher does well to get down low & get it behind for a Finn Harps corner!

  • 19'

GOAL: The hosts ahead! Kavanagh who has started brightly, combines with Patching & frees Michael Duffy haring into the left side of the penalty area & driving a crisp finish beyond away keeper James McKeown!

  • 14'

Finn Harps' are pressing admirably high but they are undone by an accurate pass which sets Akintunde away. Conor Tourish bails him out with a well-timed block before Kavanagh balloons a shot high & wide

  • 11'

CHANCE: Will Patching swings a corner in for the hosts & Cameron McJannet, steaming onto it, plants a meaty header wide

  • 3'
