Match Report
Rovers drop points in Tolka Park stalemate
Shamrock Rovers dropped points in the title race as they were held to a scoreless draw by Shelbourne in a scrappy & tenaciously contested game at Tolka Park.
This outcome, whilst not ideal, is far from disastrous for Rovers as they remain two points clear of second-placed Derry with a game in hand on the Candystripes.
These two teams had contrasting Cup games at the weekend and Shamrock Rovers, like at the Brandywell on Sunday, again started sloppily. Goalkeeper Alan Mannus was fortunate that his lackadaisical goal kick, deflected off the tenacious Sean Boyd, only led to a throw in.
Stephen Bradley’s men did sharpen up but were far from free flowing. Indeed headers, from defenders Ronan Finn & Daniel Cleary from set pieces were the nearest they came, a purist’s match indeed!
Boyd was a nuisance up front for Shels but like Rory Gaffney at the other end, he lacked the service from teammates to cause any real goalmouth panic.
Cleary shocked the slumbering stadium back into life when he hit a bolt from the blue. Strutting out beyond the central semi-circle, the defender smacked a thunderbolt in from range that kissed the stranded Brendan Clarke’s crossbar.
Aaron Greene added impetus for the visitors when he replaced Gaffney, but it was the hosts who piled the pressure on towards the end.
First, Cleary was fortunate not to concede a penalty after carelessly dangling his arm out unnaturally in the area. Then a flurry of Shane Farrell free kicks led to substitute, the youngster Aodh Dervin, rasping a low, lightning quick volley just wide.
Shels will be very satisfied with this result, rounding off a wonderful week’s work having advanced to the FAI Cup semis at the weekend.
For the Hoops, the title remains firmly in their own hands, but Derry will be extremely encouraged watching what was a sluggish, disjointed performance.
They play relegation threatened UCD on Monday. Anything but maximum points there & the whispers of doubts may grow a lot louder.

Shamrock survives the late onslaught and its FULL TIME, 0-0!
Smith wins a home free kick just outside the box, poor foul by Jack Byrne
A rasper from Dervin as he hits a shot from a loose ball caused by Boyd's peskiness up front! Just past the post!
We're into the first of FOUR MINUTES ADDED TIME
Shels pushing late on with Shane Farrell's dangerous deliveries, but Alan Mannus is not required to save
Cleary hits one from range again but its far less troublesome to the home fan's glee! A sign of Shamrock's frustration
Into the final eight minutes now, are we to have a winner? Besides Cleary's thunderbolt, neither team has really done enough to win
Mark Coyle on for Lunney in Shelbourne's second sub
Aidomo Emakhu on for Burke as Rovers look to score the goal that will move them four points ahead of second-placed Derry
Shamrock's third changes sees attacker Richie Towell replace the ineffective Dylan Watts
CROSSBAR: Daniel Cleary decides to take it by the scruff of the neck, strides forward past the semi-circles and unleashes a belter that rattles Brendan Clarke's crossbar! Finally, some goalmouth action!
TACKLE: Luke Byrne does well to dispossess Greene, having coped with Gaffney well all game
Stephen Bradley switches his strikers- Aaron Greene replaces Rory Gaffney, who has little to none of the ball
CHANCE: Burke drives a fierce shot in which flashes across goal!
Gannon the third visiting player carded for scything down the scampering Smith
CHANCE: Lunney now whips in a peach of a cross, but Smith is being sandwiched by defenders & can only head harmlessly high
Jack Byrne trying to pull the strings for the league leaders but he overhits a pass straight out. Increasingly it feels like a "one goal wins it" game
Dervin, lively since coming on, is in late on O'Neill and collects Shelbourne's first booking
Farrugia has been hauled at half time, Chris McCann on in his place
SECOND HALF: Back underway! Rovers need to improve if they are to go four points clear
HALF TIME: Scrappy & feisty but goalless
Kavanagh & then Gannon with crucial defensive interventions for Shamrock here, they'll be happy to see half time
Farrugia looks rattled & he can count himself lucky not to be shown his second yellow as he goes in late on Boyd
Play stopped for a moment there as the officials dealt with an object thrown onto the pitch- not what anyone wants to see, play has resumed now & there's five minutes or so until the interval
Now Farrugia, who has been more hit than miss so far, reacts badly to a decision and is booked for his protests
Graham Burke the first man booked as he brings down winger Matty Smith. Surprising that that's the first yellow card in what's been a very niggly first half
Shelbourne are, collectively, neutralising the Shamrock Rovers attack, which just is lacking it normal, lethal mojo. But Shels & Boyd are looking lively when they get the ball down that end
Aodh Dervin is on earlier than expected as Brian McManus is forced off through injury for Shels
Rovers with their first period of dominance & Ronan Finn knocks a back-post header wide from Sean Kavanagh's cross
Home midfielder JJ Lunney is orchestrating some moves with a delightful passing range but neither goalkeeper has had to get their gloves dirty
Really sloppy from the league leaders as Daniel Cleary's pass simply goes under the foot of the dozing Neil Farrugia-poor start from them, again
Shels starting strongly, backed by a boisterous home crowd! Cup hero Boyd closes down Mannus with enough venom to win a throw-in high up & they've sustained that pressure to win a corner
KICK OFF: Underway! A decade since Shelbourne last beat Shamrock, another one would really shake the title race up!
KO: Kick off is imminent as the teams take to the pitch
TEAM NEWS: For Shamrock, Alan Mannus returns in goal along with Ronan Finn, Graham Burke & Garry O'Neill back in the team tonight- it's a big opportunity for Rovers to cement their league lead
TEAM NEWS: Shelbourne's Sean Boyd, starts after recently extending his contract & Brian McManus is in from the FAI Cup team on Sunday
