Super sub Keogh wins it at the death for Sligo
Substitute Seamus Keogh’s last minute strike saw Sligo Rovers seal a 2-1 victory over Derry City at the Showgrounds tonight.
Buoyed by a large home crowd, Sligo showed no signs of off the field issues as they made a fast start in the opening minutes. Adam McDonnell was particularly impressive early on in midfield and created two early opportunities early on.
Derry’s first chance came in the 7th when Ronan Boyce got on the end of Will Patching’s free-kick. His header however when just wide of Ed McGinty’s goal.
While Derry grew into the game, it was Sligo who struck first on twenty minutes through Gary Buckley. McDonnell put in a terrific corner which beat everyone except the Cork native who had the easiest of finishes at the far post.
The Candystripes responded well and should have been level five minutes later when Derry were left with a two on one with McGinty. The Sligo keeper did well however to rush Will Patching who only had to pass to Joe Thompson for a tap in.
The visitors would draw level however just before half-time. The league’s top scorer Jamie McGonigle took advantage of Colm Horgan’s heavy touch before slotting past McGinty to leave it 1-1 at the break.
Derry lost full-back Cameron Dummigan in the first half, but his replacement Brandon Kavanagh made a real impact, especially in the beginning of the second half. Derry keeper Brian Maher did really well to tip his shot around the post in the opening couple of minutes in what was another accomplished performance for the Irish under-21 international.
Karl O’Sullivan was similarly influential at the other end and set up Aidan Kenna for a great chance on the hour mark. The former Hearts striker couldn’t get a touch however for what would have been a certain goal.
Both sides continued to search for the winner but both goalkeepers were in top form and determined not to be beaten again. Ed McGinty denied Will Patching from close range on two separate occasions while Brian Maher was as solid as ever to hold off the Sligo onslaught.
Indeed, a draw looked certain until literally the last kick of the ball when Seamus Keogh became a hometown hero as he smashed the ball into the roof of the Derry net to seal a vital three points for the Bit O’Red.

Cillian Heaney on for Karl O'Sullivan as Will Patching has another free saved.
Another yellow this time for Sligo's Greg Bolger.

Keena should have done better there. Does really well to cut in and beat two Derry defenders. He tries to find the top corner but he fires the ball way over.
Ed McGinty makes a really good save from another Patching free kick. Both goalkeepers have been excellent tonight.
Garry Buckley is off for Nando Pinjacker for Sligo.
Really good spell for Sligo in the last few minutes. Their latest move ends with a Greg Bolger shot that goes wide. The Bit O'Red will be very encouraged however.
Karl O'Sullivan puts a great ball in for Aidan Keena who can't quite a touch on it which would have surely ended up in the net. Best chance for Sligo so far in the second half.
Matty Smith comes on for Derry in place of Danny Rafferty.
Brandon Kavanagh has been excellent in this second half so far. He's been involved in nearly all of Derry's attacks so far from right back. His latest cross is cleared but Derry regain possession almost immediately.
Brandon Kavanagh with a curling shot which hits off one of the Sligo defenders. The resulting corner is cleared.
Back underway at the Showgrounds.
Half-time and it's 1-1. Very entertaining game so far with plenty of chances at both ends. Set up for a really entertaining second half.
Speaking of the devil, McGonigle with a real poachers goal just before the break. Colm Horgan takes a heavy touch and McGonigle takes full advantage dispossesing him and slotting home.
McGinty does well to come out and deny Jamie McGonigle who made one of his trademark runs in behind. Good goalkeeping however.
Derry edging the last few minutes without creating any meaningful chances. Patching's latest free-kick is cleared away.
Derry edging the last few minutes without creating any meaningful chances. Patching's latest free-kick is cleared away.
Derry struggling with Sligo's high line but do look threatening on the break. Very entertaining game so far.
Karl O'Sullivan hits a shot straight at Maher but he spills and just about collects the ball at the second time of asking from the clutches of Greg Bolger.
Brandon Kavanagh is on for the injured Cameron Dummigan for Derry.
Derry should be level. Joe Thompson and Patching however miscommunicate in what really should have been a tap in. Credit to keeper Ed McGinty however for forcing them to make a decision.
Gary Buckley gets the break through from Adam McDonnell\'s corner. His cross found Buckley at the far post who had the easiest of finishes to tap in the breaking ball. 1-0 Sligo.
Lovely turn from Aidan Keena before taking a great shot which is saved by Maher. Corner kick.
Brian Maher looking very assured in the Derry net. He's cut out a number of crosses already. Easy to see why he's an Irish under 21 international.
Game settling down after a frantic opening 10 minutes. Both teams looking to utilise the pace of their wingers.
Ronan Boyce goes very through a header from Will Patching's free-kick. His header however goes just left and wide.
Great start from Sligo who have created two early chances, one from a corner and another just a moment ago from Adam McDonnell.
