Match Report

10 games unbeaten for Shamrock Rovers

Shamrock Rovers stretched their unbeaten streak to 10 games after a comfortable 3-1 win over Finn Harps at Tallaght Stadium.

First half strikes from Pico Lopes and a brace from Danny Mandroiu sealed all three points for The Hoops.

It was a quiet opening quarter of an hour, but Shamrock Rovers did control the majority of possession with Richie Towell and Jack Byrne seeing a lot of the ball from the off.

Stephen Bradley’s side opened the scoring after 18 minutes from a Jack Byrne corner. Lee Grace flicked the ball into the path of Rory Gaffney, but his effort was saved well by Mark McGinley.

Sadly, for Harps, Roberto Lopes was on hand to tap home from close range and give his side the lead.

Ollie Horgan’s side almost equalised within 60 seconds after Yoyo Mahdy found space inside the Shamrock Rovers box.

Mahdy opted for power from a difficult angle, but Alan Mannus was equal to it and tipped it around the posts.

Barry McNamee’s in-swinging corner found the head of Ethan Boyle, but his effort went narrowly wide.

Just minutes later, Rovers doubled their lead after some fantastic play by Sean Gannon down the right flank. Gannon squared the ball across the box, and it was met by Danny Mandroiu who chested the ball into the back of the net from close range.

The hosts found their third just before the half hour mark and it was an over-the-top, through ball from the highest order by Jack Byrne that created the goal. Byrne’s inch perfect pass was met by Danny Mandroiu whose diving header was too powerful for McGinley to increase their advantage.

The Ballybofey outfit did pull one back just before the break when Jesse Devers cross found Conor Tourish who headed home into the bottom corner to send the sides into the interval with the score at 3-1.

Mandroiu almost secured his hat trick after just thirty seconds played in the second half, but McGinley saved well to deny the Rovers’ attacker.

The home side continued their early dominance of the second half when Graham Burke slipped Richie Towell through. Towell turned excellently and released a rocket that looked destined for the back of the net, but McGinley was on hand yet again to keep the score at 3-1.

Aidomo Emakhu made a huge impact after coming off the bench at half time and he almost scored a brilliant wonder goal after dancing through tackles only to be denied by the outstretched right arm of Mark McGinley.

Moments later, Emakhu came close again, this time he was denied by the inside of the post after another solo run.

It’s a big win for Stephen Bradley and his side ahead of Monday’s clash against Sligo Rovers.
